Why did my dog have an allergic reaction after meds and food?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would recommend taking Shorty to the vet again for a follow up exam. Whatever was causing the allergic reaction is still in his body. He may need longer treatment with steroids. You can continue to give the Benadryl every 8 hours but if there is no change, I would see a vet. Good luck and kisses to Shorty!

Usually an allergic reaction to antibiotics or other medications happens right away, so it's not likely to be an allergic reaction to the medications, nut it could be an allergic reaction to food or to something in the environment. if it doesn't get better within 48 hours i would recommend having it checked and treated by your vet.

Hello. It is possible that Hoonie had a bad reaction to the medications. I would wait until he is due the next dose & administer only one of the medications ( either the antibiotic or the pain medication ). Then wait a couple of hours to administer the other one. This way, you can hopefully prevent another upset, or at least see which medication he may be sensitive to. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. There seems to be two different types of 'spots' on Baxter. The pinky raised ones look like an allergic reaction, and the type that is usually caused by a bug bite. This would also make his ears swell and maybe his face including his muzzle/jowels and around his eyes. This will go away with time, and you can give him Benedryl as well, at a dose of 2mg/kg (which is about 50mg for a dog of Baxter's size). Please make sure the only active ingredient is Diphenhydramine, and that you don't get a 'non-drowsy' version as these have other drugs that are VERY toxic to dogs . The other spots that are only on his left side, under his left arm and down his left side, look like bruising on the picture, and more of a scratch, almost like road rash. If this is new as well then I would recommend getting Baxter seen right away, especially if he has no history of a big trauma. The bruising is especially worrying if he hasn't had a big hit/accident, as it is worrying for a clotting disorder. Best of luck with Baxter.

You should probably consult with your local veterinarian because we have limits of what we discuss on this forum. Benadryl can certainly be given but you should always contact your vet prior to giving any medicine just to make sure it's under the guidance of a licensed professional that you have a client patient veterinary relationship. Your vet can assist you and may advise an appointment so they can better treat Nova Barton. Sometimes allergies and allergic reactions need drugs stronger than just an antihistamine. Again, I hope she gets better. You and her will feel a lot better once you make the call.

Hello there. It sure looks like Wookie has some hives! He must be having an allergic reaction to something. I highly doubt it is food related. Food allergies are actually quite uncommon in dogs. It is more likely to be something in the environment or he got stung by an insect. I would recommend you give him some Benadryl (diphenhydramine). NOT the non-drowsy kind. He is a big dog so he can have 3 capsules/tablets. Hide them in a small piece of hotdog or cheese or something he likes to eat. I know it sounds like a lot of medicine but dogs take a high dose as they metabolize it much faster than we do. It may make him sleepy but it usually doesn't. If the hives are not gone in the morning or if you notice him have any trouble breathing, you need to take him to the vet right away. I hope this helps. Best wishes to you and Wookie! Dr. Amber

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bear! Medications can mess with an already sensitive stomach. So if his decrease in appetite matches when you started medications for his skin that is likely the reason. See if adding warm water to the dry food helps or a tablespoon of canned food with in the same brand will get him to eat. Hopefully when his skin is cleared up and the medication is over he will resume eating normally. I wish you the best
