How much Albendazole can I safely give my dog for parasite treatment?

The dose for albomar is 5mg per kg of body weight. A puppy weighing 10kg would receive 2ml. One dose should be adequate to treat tapeworms; this dewormer will not kill roundworms or other intestinal parasites. There are minimal side effects of this medication, but if there is a very large parasitic tapeworm load in the gut, pets can show signs of intestinal obstruction, such as decreased appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, etc.

Albendazole is not commonly used in pets. For routine deworming, Pyrantel is a good option and will kill the common parasites of kittens (roundworms and hookworms). Yes, they can be taken together, but because Bayer Expert Care is available without a prescription, the strength of the praziquantal will not be a strong as found in Drontal (which can only be given by prescription from the vet), and you may not get as good results. I would recommend taking Josie into the vet for an exam to get Drontal, it is an extremely effective and safe deworming treatment.

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would not recommend the albendazole as it has cause a bone marrow toxicosis when used in cats. Very dangerous situation. The current thinking is to treat these cats with fenbendazole & a probiotic like Purina FortFlora or Proviable KP. Check with your vet about switching to the fenbendazole. Take care.

If Oscar only weighs 5.5 lbs and if he was given 5mls that is 200mg of albendazole and at that dose it has been reported to cause mental dullness and decreased appetite in cats. It can also affect white and red blood cells. I don't have much information about overdoses in dogs. Stop giving him the medication. The dose of ivermectin should be ok. If he gets worse or doesn't improve he should be taken to an emergency hospital. Good luck!

Praziquantel is typically given as a single dose. It may need to be repeated in 2 weeks. According to package information, one 34mg tablet is the dose given to dogs between 6 and 10 pounds. You will need to confirm this with your veterinarian though. Legally, we are prohibited from telling you to administer any medication to your pet in the absence of a physical exam.
