My dog ate Advil Cold & Sinus. Why is she so agitated and panting?

Poor Darby! I would not give her any more ibuprofen as this is toxic to dogs. I would have your vet take a look at her as I am worried about her not eating/drinking and breathing funny especially since she is so young and small. It is possible she could have aspiration pneumonia which if left untreated could be very serious. Your vet will be able to listen to her heart and lungs, and even do blood work and x-rays if needed. Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Advil, can cause both kidney damage and gastrointestinal ulcers. If Hank has his blood kidney values checked 48 hours after he ate the Advil and they were normal then it would be very unlikely that the continued vomiting is from kidney damage. If Hank ate the Advil less than two weeks ago it’s possible that he’s still having some gastrointestinal symptoms. I think it would be best to recheck with your vet since Hank has continued to vomit.

The active ingredient in Advil is ibuprofen. Ibuprofen is toxic as low as about 50 mg/kg. For a 30 pound dog, that is about 700 mg of ibuprofen or about 3 regular strength tablets. It does not sound like Roley could have ingested that much ibuprofen, but if they are extra strength tablets those are 600 mg, so he would only have to eat 1 to potentially have some toxic side effects. If you have any question about how much he may have ingested, I would certainly recommend contacting your veterinarian for a recommendation. Regardless of how much Roley may have ingested, if he does not seem to feel well, does not want to eat or vomits, I would recommend having your vet see him right away. Oh no, Max! Ingestion of ibuprofen (Motrin) is quite toxic to dogs and can cause GI ulceration, severe liver damage, and acute renal (kidney) failure. Contact the ASPCA animal poison control center at (888) 426-4435 and they will help you determine the potential severity of Max's ingestion based upon the maximum amount of ibuprofen he may have ingested for his current body weight. From there, I expect that he will need to go to an ER vet for blood work and likely fluid therapy and monitoring. Depending on how recently he ingested the ibuprofen, they may also be able to induce vomiting. Good luck!

Motrin can be very toxic to the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract in dogs, but the toxicity is dose dependent. At 25 mg/kg we can see stomach and intestinal ulcers and even perforations. At >100 mg/kg the medication can cause severe kidney failure. 25 mg/kg for Susie would be 477 mg, and that would mean she would need to lick over 2 tsp of the Motrin off the floor to ingest a toxic dose. It may be that something else is causing her vomiting and decrease in appetite, and I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. If you think Susie may have ingested over 2 tsp I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian ASAP. If she is otherwise healthy it may be okay to wait until you are off work.

Fortunately this dose is low enough that it should not cause a concern, as long as you are certain more than one capsule was not ingested.
