My dog ate Advil. Why is he still throwing up? Is it kidney damage?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 10 months and 11 days old | 75 lbs

My dog recently ate 5 Advil. We immediately took him to the vet and they included vomiting as well as having him stay overnight for an IV and observation. They said he seems fine (he is a large dog). We fed him the diet that the vet recommended for 5 days then tapered him to his normal diet, but he is still occasionally (2ish times a week) throwing up for unexplained reasons. Is it possible that he has kidney damage even though the vet said that he is fine?

Ibuprofen, the active ingredient in Advil, can cause both kidney damage and gastrointestinal ulcers. If Hank has his blood kidney values checked 48 hours after he ate the Advil and they were normal then it would be very unlikely that the continued vomiting is from kidney damage. If Hank ate the Advil less than two weeks ago it’s possible that he’s still having some gastrointestinal symptoms. I think it would be best to recheck with your vet since Hank has continued to vomit.

Ibuprofen overdose can cause GI, renal, and central nervous system (CNS) effects. So a 5 kg dog ingesting advil is alarming often lead to gastrointestinal (GI) problems and ulceration, presented as vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain. Please seek medical support by a vet and also kidneys should be tested to make sure there is no acute renal damage which is also possible here. Please go to a vet sooner than later!

Immediate check up is required as this intoxication could lead to severe side effects like gastrointestinal ulcerations and acute kidney failure. It is essential to take Buckshot ASAP to your local veterinarian.

My dog ate Advil Cold & Sinus. Why is she so agitated and panting?

Advil is potentially very toxic for dogs, it can cause acute kidney failure and the amount she ingested is enough to cause severe damage. if she did not throw up the pills you must take her to the emergencies urgently, she will need to be put on IV fluids and will be given activated charcoal to try and neutralize the toxic effect of Advil. she will also need to have a blood test done to make sure the kidneys are not affected.

Ibuprofen intoxication can cause stomach upset, ulceration in the stomach and, if ingested in larger amounts, problems with kidneys. Typically, the symptoms occur within 24-48hrs from ibuprofen ingestion, so if you dog ate the pill 5 days ago, most likely everything is fine. As long as she is not having any gastrointestinal signs at present (no vomiting, no blood in stools, good appetite) and she is passing urine as normal, most likely there is nothing to worry about.

Since you managed to go take her to a vet right away and he she had the proper treatment there is a good chance that she will be ok. You will find out next week when you take her to your own vet for some blood tests checking her kidneys and liver. If those are normal then she did not get damaged by the Ibuprofen.

My puppy ate baby Motrin and is throwing up. Does she need a vet?

Motrin can be very toxic to the kidneys and gastrointestinal tract in dogs, but the toxicity is dose dependent. At 25 mg/kg we can see stomach and intestinal ulcers and even perforations. At >100 mg/kg the medication can cause severe kidney failure. 25 mg/kg for Susie would be 477 mg, and that would mean she would need to lick over 2 tsp of the Motrin off the floor to ingest a toxic dose. It may be that something else is causing her vomiting and decrease in appetite, and I would recommend having her seen by a veterinarian. If you think Susie may have ingested over 2 tsp I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian ASAP. If she is otherwise healthy it may be okay to wait until you are off work.

My dog threw up after OTC pain meds. How long until she feels better?

I am not sure which OTC pain and anti-inflammatory medication you used but some of them can be toxic to dogs. Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, and Naproxen can cause liver/kidney problems when used in dogs. Aspirin can be used but it can cause gastric ulcers. She really should be examined by your vet to determine the cause, especially since she has been feeling bad for over a day. Your vet can run labwork, if needed, and prescribe medications to help treat. She may need a gateointestinal protectant or other medications. Hope she feels better soon.
