Dachshund leg injury: Are antibiotics safe and causing diarrhea?

Poor Hildegarde! I would start by not feeding her for 12 hours and then reintroduce small amounts of plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to see if this settles her tummy. You can also get her some probiotics to help firm her stool. I would not give her any doxycycline. This is not a typical antibiotic used for GI upset and it usually will cause more GI upset. If she continues to have diarrhea, I would have you vet look at her. I worry she is going to become dehydrated since she is so small. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get her on the proper antibiotics. I hope this helps!

Anesthesia can cause these symptoms along with the stress of the stay but that antibiotic can be a factor also. If he is eating and drinking fine with only a small amount of blood at the end of the BM then you can monitor for anything further. If it is diarrhea with blood through out then I would get him seen. You can always try boiled chicken and rice as this is bland and easy to digest. You may need to add canine probiotics while in antibiotics. You may want to talk to your vet about a different one that is easier on the stomach

When my patients have diarrhea after antibiotics I will usually prescribe a canine specific probiotic to help get the good bacteria loaded back up in the GI tract. My favorite is Proviable and it also comes with a paste to help firm up the stools. My second favorite is Fortiflora. If you have seen absolutely no improvement by tomorrow, then he should see his veterinarian again. There can be other causes for a swollen leg aside from infection. Vasculitis, for example, is possible. However, it is always important to start antibiotics first as other medications could make an infection worse if not treated. These can be challenging cases! It is possible that she could be having a sensitivity to the antibiotic or this could be another complication to her upset tummy. I would make sure you are feeding her a complete meal then wait 15-20 minutes befor giving her the antibiotics. Also you may want to try feeding her only plain chicken (no bones) and rice as This is bland and easy on the tummy for recovery. If This doesn’t help then I would talk to your vet about a recheck. It is most commonly recommended to give antibiotics with food since this will lessen the chance of developing an upset stomach with vomiting and diarrhea as a side effect of the antibiotics. In this case, however, Nicco is already having diarrhea and experiencing a loss of appetite. It should be just fine to give him the antibiotics (metronidazole or Flagyl, I assume, given the bloody diarrhea) without food until he is eating normally again. You can also ask your vet about offering Nicco a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice since he is refusing to eat the Royal Canin gastrointestinal low fat diet. If your veterinarian approves this plan, a typical rule of thumb is to feed 1 cup of a 50:50 chicken/rice mixture for every 10 pounds of body weight per day, divided into 3-4 smaller meals. If Nicco is still refusing to eat, experiencing bloody diarrhea, or begins to vomit by tomorrow, I recommend calling your vet since he may need to be reevaluated with additional diagnostic testing or supportive treatments. Violet's diarrhea is probably from the recent change in food and possibly the antibiotics she was on. For some dogs canned food is too rich and is difficult for them to digest. If she will only eat canned food you could consider feeding her a low residue prescription diet (Hill's i/d, Royal Canin GI low fat). You can purchase these from your vet. Since Violet has been having diarrhea for a longer period of time she may have an imbalance of the normal bacteria in her gut. When this happens dogs usually need antibiotics and probiotics to help get everything back in balance. And finally, I always recommend having a fecal performed in cases of diarrhea to rule out intestinal parasites. I hope this helps. Best of luck.
