My dog has bloody diarrhea after surgery and antibiotics. Should I worry?

This could be completely normal after the surgery and could be due to an inflammation of the last part of the colon. As a first approach I would suggest to start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. I am So sorry to hear that Russel has been so unwell. I am happy to hear his respiratory issues are resolved. It is possible that the same infection has affected his gastrointestnal tract, that the antibiotics themselves have upset his natural gut flora, or even that it’s all coincidence and Russel simply ate something he should have. From what you are describing, a liquid bowel movement which has fresh blood in it, it sounds as though Russell has colitis, or inflammation of the last portion of the large intestines. There are several causes of colitis in dogs, ranging from bacterial infections, parasite infestations, IBD, stress, or ingestion of contaminated food. Since you have only noticed these issues for a day I would continue to monitor Russell at home. Provide a bland diet of boiled boneless chicken breast and white rice and plenty of fresh water. You can also add cooked mashed skinless sweet potatoes to help with the diarrhoea, a dog formulated probiotic, and low sodium chicken broth to help with fluid intake. If the episodes continue, if Russel becomes depressed, passes large amounts of blood, vomits, or seems very uncomfortable take Him to see his vet immediately. If Maude had surgery on her mouth, it is unlikely that her colon or rectum would be affected. Instead I would be more concerned that a reaction to the medication or a bacterial over growth is the cause. Any time blood is present, you need to see the veterinarian. Call them today and start Maude on a bland diet. Your veterinarian may make recommendations about switching the antibiotic, adding in a probiotic and is generally the best one to guide the treatment. I hope she starts feeling better quickly.

Unfortunately, bloody diarrhea often does not respond to at home treatment and may require a trip to your veterinarian. Since your veterinarian is likely closed today, you can certainly try a bland diet of 1/2 cooked white rice and 1/2 cooked white meat chicken (no skin or bones). If the bloody diarrhea continues with this diet, I would contact your veterinarian tomorrow. It is possible that she could be having a sensitivity to the antibiotic or this could be another complication to her upset tummy. I would make sure you are feeding her a complete meal then wait 15-20 minutes befor giving her the antibiotics. Also you may want to try feeding her only plain chicken (no bones) and rice as This is bland and easy on the tummy for recovery. If This doesn’t help then I would talk to your vet about a recheck. Your vet may want to give her an anti-nausea medicine, change her antibiotics or take X-rays if indicated. I hope this helps!

Riley’s stool looks a bit soft. This may be be from being on doxycycline as antibiotic associated diarrhea is fairly common. Your vet may be able to dispense a probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable that can help return the stool to normal. The blood may be due to stress colitis. Typically, metronidazole (flagyl) is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic for the gut that recommended for blood tinged soft stool, however as she just finished a course of antibiotics, putting her on probiotics and a plain boiled rice and chicken diet (unless she has an allergy to chicken) or a prescription Hills intestinal diet or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet for 3-5 days may be enough to allow the irritated intestinal mucosa to heal. This can be caused by imbalance of the bacteria in the gut due to the antibiotics, if they have been given for another condition. This can also be caused by severe parasitic infections, bacterial infections, and conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease. I recommend having Oliver seen by the vet who prescribed the antibiotics, as they may recommend a probiotic to add to his treatment, or discontinue/switch the antibiotics.
