Why does my dog have diarrhea after dental work, antibiotics, and soft food?

When my patients have diarrhea after antibiotics I will usually prescribe a canine specific probiotic to help get the good bacteria loaded back up in the GI tract. My favorite is Proviable and it also comes with a paste to help firm up the stools. My second favorite is Fortiflora. I would encourage you to call your veterinarian and discuss the possibility of using one of these products. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

I hate to hear that Jersey is not feeling well. I do think the continuing diarrhea and regurgitation do indicate that she did not respond like she should have to the antibiotic. No knowing her full history, its hard to say what could be causing it but in puppies, parasites including Giardia are very common. You can also see infections in the GI tract, chronic foreign in bodies, organ dysfunction and food allergy as other causes. If Jersey is acting normal, has a good energy level and normal pink gums, I would recommend to make an appointment with her normal veterinarian to discuss next steps. The doctor may recommend a special diet, bloodwork and/or radiographs to start trying to figure out what is going on. She or he may also recommend special parasite testing depending on where you live. Feed Jersey small amounts of boiled white breast chicken meat and white rice. Make sure she is drinking water and keep her in a cool, comfortable area. If Jersey seems to be uncomfortable, has pale gums, seems weak or in distress, then you should go to the emergency clinic. I am sorry to hear about your recent troubles with Nora's health. I have certainly heard of lots of different side effects long term from any sort of anesthetic procedure, the most common actually being changes to behavior. I have definitely also heard of animals that have come blind or deaf from anesthetic (though usually it is temporarily) episodes. While I can not say for sure what has happened in this case, I would definitely want to completely rule out the possibility of a coincidence first since we are dealing with such an elderly patient. I imagine that with an older patient, preoperative blood work was obtained and analyzed prior to placing her under anesthesia. If this was completely normal, I would definitely recommend having some x-rays and ultrasound imagine procured to rule out the presence of any sort of malignant process or signs of organ failure. If you are able to do this with at least a relative amount of certainty, this still doesn't resolve the issue. I would considering adding more fiber to the diet and a probiotic to see if this helps solidify the fecal material while investigating the cause. I don't want to sound grim, but at nearly 16 years of age there are a number of sinister things within the body that could be responsible for Nora's diarrhea unfortunately. The anesthetic event could have certainly compromised the immune system in such a way to make her susceptible to something that may have been lying in wait or brewing slowly. Poor Blue! The anaesthetic combined with the pain of the teeth clean can really upset their tummies. You could try feeding a diet of plain chicken and rice for a few days, but I'd urge you to give your vet a call. They shluld be able to prescribe you a gastroprotectant liquid that can help settle the tummy. If the diarrohea dies not settle it will need to be treated too.

It is possible that she could be having a sensitivity to the antibiotic or this could be another complication to her upset tummy. I would make sure you are feeding her a complete meal then wait 15-20 minutes befor giving her the antibiotics. Also you may want to try feeding her only plain chicken (no bones) and rice as This is bland and easy on the tummy for recovery. If This doesn’t help then I would talk to your vet about a recheck. Your vet may want to give her an anti-nausea medicine, change her antibiotics or take X-rays if indicated. I hope this helps!

If Kassi hasn't had soft food before, this change of diet could be causing the soft stool and vomiting. It could also be caused by any medication she is currently taking.
