My Dachshund has diarrhea and isn't eating. Should I give her human doxycycline?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund | Female | spayed | 10 years and 3 months old | 22 lbs

My female Dachshund has been nauseous for one day That was 3 days ago. Loose stools and in a limited amount----not like usual for her. Eating very little and only a few bites ever 3 or 4 hours. She is 22 lbs and about 4 lbs overweight. 11 yrs old May I give her some anti-biotics I have for myself in smaller amount. Namely: DOXYCYCLINE HYCL 100 mg?

Poor Hildegarde! I would start by not feeding her for 12 hours and then reintroduce small amounts of plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to see if this settles her tummy. You can also get her some probiotics to help firm her stool. I would not give her any doxycycline. This is not a typical antibiotic used for GI upset and it usually will cause more GI upset. If she continues to have diarrhea, I would have you vet look at her. I worry she is going to become dehydrated since she is so small. Your vet will be able to determine the cause and get her on the proper antibiotics. I hope this helps!

No, I would not recommend giving Hildegarde the doxycycline that you have left over. Doxycycline can cause stomach upset so it would not be a good idea as it is likely to make her GI signs worse. Doxycycline is also unlikely to help with any causes of stomach upset. It would be best to schedule a visit for Hildegarde with your veterinarian so that the appropriate medication can be prescribed. Until you can get her to the veterinarian you can try offering a bland diet of boiled chicken and sweet potato or rice, but I encourage you to see a veterinarian soon.

Hi there, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Diarrhea is not typically a symptom of tickborne disease so this is probably unrelated. Sometimes diarrhea can be a result of antibiotics, but usually it starts earlier in the course of treatment, so the timing doesn't seem related to that either. More likely she got into something that upset her tummy. As long as she's feeling fine, probiotics are a great idea, and you can feed a bland diet of boiled chicken with white rice for a few days. Once her stools improve, mix the rice/chicken mixture with her kibble to gradually switch her back. If the diarrhea doesn't improve over the next few days, and certainly if she starts acting sick (decreased appetite, vomiting, lethargy, etc), then a vet visit is in order. Hope this helps!

Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I'm sorry that Haus is having this issue. I would not be concerned about the water consumption increase. I have not heard of anyone saying that has happened with a dog on doxycycline but every animal is an individual and can affect them differently. Either way, the extra water will not harm him. If the diarrhea persists for more than 36 hours then I think a vet visit would be warranted as that can be a side effect of the medication. Why does my dog have diarrhea after dental work, antibiotics, and soft food?

Violet's diarrhea is probably from the recent change in food and possibly the antibiotics she was on. For some dogs canned food is too rich and is difficult for them to digest. If she will only eat canned food you could consider feeding her a low residue prescription diet (Hill's i/d, Royal Canin GI low fat). You can purchase these from your vet. Since Violet has been having diarrhea for a longer period of time she may have an imbalance of the normal bacteria in her gut. When this happens dogs usually need antibiotics and probiotics to help get everything back in balance. And finally, I always recommend having a fecal performed in cases of diarrhea to rule out intestinal parasites. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

My dog has Erlichia, is vomiting, and won't eat. How can I help?

Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach with your question about Luna. I'm sorry she has Erlichia! The doxycycline can cause stomach upset, and to help with that, try giving her the medication with food. Give it with some boiled white meat chicken (no bones or skin) and white rice. You can mix in some low sodium chicken broth as well to keep her hydrated. It is very concerning she can't keep down water, and keep a close eye on her. Take her back into the vet first thing in the morning if she is still like this. I hope this helps!

Dachshund leg injury: Are antibiotics safe and causing diarrhea?

I am sorry to hear this! It is a good thing they checked for broken bones. Some antibiotics do give diarrhea, so your vet may have recommended taking it with food. You can also inquire about probiotics. If the diarrhea is serious or seems to be making him feel poorly, they may recommend a change. If this is an injection that you are doing at home and you have concerns for safety, I would certainly not hesitate to give them a call! I hope this helps!

My puppy has blood in her stool after antibiotics. Should I see a vet?

Riley’s stool looks a bit soft. This may be be from being on doxycycline as antibiotic associated diarrhea is fairly common. Your vet may be able to dispense a probiotic such as FortiFlora or Proviable that can help return the stool to normal. The blood may be due to stress colitis. Typically, metronidazole (flagyl) is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic for the gut that recommended for blood tinged soft stool, however as she just finished a course of antibiotics, putting her on probiotics and a plain boiled rice and chicken diet (unless she has an allergy to chicken) or a prescription Hills intestinal diet or Royal Canin Gastrointestinal diet for 3-5 days may be enough to allow the irritated intestinal mucosa to heal. My dog is sick from heartworm meds. Should I keep giving them?

Both doxycycline and prednisone can cause vomiting and diarrhea. I am not sure of the dose that your dog is on but maybe your vet could adjust the dose so he has less gastrointestinal problems. Feeding the medication with a meal can sometimes help with the gastrointestinal side effects so make sure to give with food. Your vet could also prescribe an anti-vomiting medication, probiotic, and GI protectant which may help, too. At this point, If he is just going to vomit the medication than it doesn't make sense to give it. You should wait and see if your vet can prescribe additional medications to help with the vomiting and diarrhea. If the vomiting and diarrhea has stopped, you could try to give one medication at a time with food and see how he does.
