Why does my dog still have diarrhea after antibiotics & on wet food?

Violet's diarrhea is probably from the recent change in food and possibly the antibiotics she was on. For some dogs canned food is too rich and is difficult for them to digest. If she will only eat canned food you could consider feeding her a low residue prescription diet (Hill's i/d, Royal Canin GI low fat). You can purchase these from your vet. Since Violet has been having diarrhea for a longer period of time she may have an imbalance of the normal bacteria in her gut. When this happens dogs usually need antibiotics and probiotics to help get everything back in balance. And finally, I always recommend having a fecal performed in cases of diarrhea to rule out intestinal parasites. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

It takes 3-4weeks for the lining of the gut to fully repair and regenerate. If you have found a food which helped, I recommend you continue to feed this for a month to allow everything to settle down. I would also recommend continuing with a fibre/probiotic supplement such as fortiflora and in rare cases prescription medication may be required to regulate bowel motion also

Hi. I would recommend adding a spoonful of canned pumpkin to each meal to increase fiber. You can also add boiled rice. If that doesn't help, i would recommend talking with your veterinarian about possibly getting him on metronidazole to help firm up the stools. Good luck

Typically if you give your pet probiotics this will help with the diarrhea. I would recommend giving Culturelle over the counter to the food daily and hopefully this is enough to get things back to normal. However some pets will have severe bacteria dysbiosis (imbalance) which requires an additional antibiotic to get things to clear up completely. Typically I prescribe Metronidazole and this does great to get pets back to normal fast.

It is highly digestible palatable diet that easy on the gastrointestinal tract. You can also add Fortiflora as a probiotic. I hate to hear that Jersey is not feeling well. I do think the continuing diarrhea and regurgitation do indicate that she did not respond like she should have to the antibiotic. No knowing her full history, its hard to say what could be causing it but in puppies, parasites including Giardia are very common. You can also see infections in the GI tract, chronic foreign in bodies, organ dysfunction and food allergy as other causes. If Jersey is acting normal, has a good energy level and normal pink gums, I would recommend to make an appointment with her normal veterinarian to discuss next steps. The doctor may recommend a special diet, bloodwork and/or radiographs to start trying to figure out what is going on. She or he may also recommend special parasite testing depending on where you live. Feed Jersey small amounts of boiled white breast chicken meat and white rice. Make sure she is drinking water and keep her in a cool, comfortable area. If Jersey seems to be uncomfortable, has pale gums, seems weak or in distress, then you should go to the emergency clinic. You may want to consider adding in a veterinary probiotic supplement that is formulated for dogs and puppies. I would also recommend consulting with your veterinarian regarding the diarrhea. Diarrhea in puppies can become very serious very quickly. There are other causes for diarrhea in puppies as well, such as parasites and viral infections, which may require further treatment from your veterinarian. Your veterinarian will likely recommend performing fecal tests to rule out some of these other potential causes.
