The term high-protein is a little vague, so puppy chow would probably be better for a lactating mom. You can always check the back of the bag and see if it's formulated for lactation. This would be found under the garaunteed analysis. The biggest requirements for a lactating dog is energy and calcium, so I wouldn't be overly concerned with protein content. Yes, you should feed a pregnant and lactating mother a puppy food as this has more calories for the extra demand of nutrition that she will need while pregnant and nursing. I would discuss with your Vet supplementing with Calcium as she is a small breed dog and low calcium is risky right after birth from nursing. They can decide if she is at risk and provide dosing and when to start. I wish you and Coco the best!

Be sure to feed her the puppy formula instead of the adult formula during her pregnancy as she will require a boost of calories, calcium, and other minerals to keep her strong during her pregnancy and during lactation (once the puppies arrive).
