Can a nursing dog eat adult dog food when puppy food isn't an option?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I would start to wean the puppies. Offer canned puppy food a few times per day but still allow them to nurse. Gradually over the next 2-3 weeks get them fully weaned. As for Tofy, I would consider feeding her 2-3 times per day. She may not need the extra calories anymore, as long as she isn't losing weight. I would be sure that she has been dewormed and I would also have the puppies dewormed starting now and every 2 weeks or follow your Vet's schedule. I would not recommend any supplements with out discussing it with your Vet while she is nursing. If Tofy isn't doing well and is losing weight then she should be examined by your vet. Any brand is fine, I like Purina, Hill's and Royal Canin, You can feed her dry, dry mixed with canned or all canned. Whatever she will eat. Be sure she is feeling ok and doesn't have a fever or abnormal vaginal discharge. If she is refusing to eat she should see a vet to be sure she doesn't have an infection. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! How old are her puppies? If they are under 4 weeks then you will need to bottle feed the puppies. If they 3-4 weeks start offering canned puppy food along with bottle feeding and have them fully weaned by 5-6 weeks. Without forcing Cali to nurse them there aren't any other options. I would suggest not breeding her again and have her spayed since she is unwilling to continue to raise the puppies and this likely will be a repetitive behavior. Yes, you should feed a pregnant and lactating mother a puppy food as this has more calories for the extra demand of nutrition that she will need while pregnant and nursing. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I recommend starting pregnant mothers on puppy food. Commercial puppy food will provide all the nutrients, vitamins and appropriate calories she needs. I do not recommend raw or home cooked diets as they are deficient in the appropriate nutrients unless balanced by a nutritionist. A pug that is younger than 6 months should eat a puppy diet to help her grow and get the adequate nutrients and vitamins she needs. Puppies and adult dogs have very different requirements in terms of calories, calcium, phosphorous, and other nutrients. As she gets older, ie in the 6-12 month range, it is OK to start mixing in an adult or all-life stages diet in with her food. Just be sure the total amount she is supposed to be eating based on what the bag says is appropriate. Eventually, once she is about 12 months, she should be on an adult dog food, for maintenance. I recommend consulting with Beanie's regular veterinarian to see what specific types of food they recommend for her! Top dog food brands include Purina, Hills Science Diet, and Royal Canin. Beanie should NOT eat a grain-free, vegetarian, or vegan diet, as these are linked with dangerous heart conditions and other growth related diseases. I hope this is helpful!

Yes that is perfectly ok. They are both balanced dog foods. Just check the bag to see how many calories per cup so you can adjust as needed (meaning if more calories in the puppy food you will have to feed a little more adult food or vice versa).
