What food and nutrients does my dog need after having puppies?

If you haven't yet, transition her to a quality puppy food. Feed her this diet until she weans the litter then transition slowly back to an adult maintenance diet. Provide plenty of fresh water as well. If necessary, you can supplement the pups with a puppy milk replacer such as Esbilac or Pet Lac. Either may be purchased from your veterinarian or the local Petco.

Puppy food is recommended over all life stages, i personally recommend one of the following: Orijen, Acana or Evolve. i advise giving her small meals 4-5 times a day, you can add wet puppy food as well it may help with her energy levels.

Personally, I really like Royal Canin's line of puppy foods - they even have a breed-specific diet for Chihuahuas :) Other good options would include Purina Pro Plan and Hills Science Diet. Whatever brand you choose, make sure to feed Peaches the puppy version the entire time that she's nursing, since she will need the extra calories to make milk for the puppies.

The term high-protein is a little vague, so puppy chow would probably be better for a lactating mom. You can always check the back of the bag and see if it's formulated for lactation. This would be found under the garaunteed analysis. The biggest requirements for a lactating dog is energy and calcium, so I wouldn't be overly concerned with protein content. Any brand is fine, I like Purina, Hill's and Royal Canin, You can feed her dry, dry mixed with canned or all canned. Whatever she will eat. Be sure she is feeling ok and doesn't have a fever or abnormal vaginal discharge. If she is refusing to eat she should see a vet to be sure she doesn't have an infection. Great question! I would feed a good quality food that is specially formulated for large-breed puppies, to make sure that your pup is getting the optimal balance of nutrients for growth at this age. Royal Canin or Purina ProPlan are both good brands - Royal Canin even makes a food specifically for Labs, so it would be great choice for your puppy :)

I recommend to have Ginny examined by the veterinarian and potentially have an x-ray to make sure there are not other puppies. Goldens generally have more puppies but litters of one can occur. Retained puppies can be fatal. Ginny needs to eat a high quality puppy food (but not large breed, just normal puppy food).
