No, I would not recommend this. Clindamycin is a prescription medication that should only be given under the direction of a veterinarian who has examined your vet and made a diagnosis. In addition, clindamycin would not be a particularly good choice for the treatment of kennel cough - its spectrum of activity doesn't cover the bacteria that are usually involved in respiratory infections in dogs.

In America you need a prescription for clindamycin. I recommend you have your veterinarian give Tink a prescription for pulsed antibiotics. For dogs with dental disease I recommend giving antibiotics for one week every month on a regular basis. That will help control the plaque and periodontal disease. Poor Sonnie! Nearly any antibiotic can cause vomiting and diarrhea as a side effect, so I would not become overly concerned about that point. If Sonnie does develop this, call his vet and offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days to allow his stomach to settle. As for the dosage, clindamycin has a wide dose range when treating abscesses. Sonnie is currently receiving 16 mg/kg, and this range can go up to 33mg/kg. Clindamycin is a very safe antibiotic. Depending on the manufacturer they can have different concentrations. If you could post the number of milligrams per ML listed on the bottle it would help if the dosage is correct. However it does seem like a good dose me. There are no known risk of a pet being on clindamycin prior to anesthesia and in fact it is a very common drug before a dental cleaning is done.

Yes, but I prefer cephalexin or cefpodoxime for skin infection. The amoxicillin dose for a dog 40lbs would be about 200mg every 12 hours. I would recommend seeing a vet though for appropriate antibiotic therapy recommendations. Topical therapy should also be considered. I typically recommend using a shampoo such as Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved. I also recommend using welactin omega 3 fish oil and essential 6 spot on by dermoscent. Malacetic conditioning spray is also a good option to spray isolated areas on the body where infection is present. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
