Can I get clindamycin for my dog's mouth infection without a vet?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Female | spayed | 12 years and 8 months old | 9.6 lbs

Is there a way to get clindamycin for a dog without prescription? I have a mini-dachshund who is prone to infections in her mouth, and she’s developing one now. My vet prescribes this every time, but is unavailable, and I can’t afford the emergency vet right now.

In America you need a prescription for clindamycin. I recommend you have your veterinarian give Tink a prescription for pulsed antibiotics. For dogs with dental disease I recommend giving antibiotics for one week every month on a regular basis. That will help control the plaque and periodontal disease. If you have this done then you should be able to get a regular prescription every month. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to help you care for Tink.
