My dog's paw wound is weeping post-surgery. How to clean and dress?

Clean the wound with warm water and antiseptic soap. Put a bandage on it to keep it clean and dry, and then put a sock over your dog’s paw to protect the bandage. Change the bandage daily, or if it gets dirty.

Usually these wounds are best managed with a "wet to dry" bandage method. This is a process where a sterile, moist dressing (usually using sterile saline) is applied directly against the wound, and then dry bandage material is placed over it, and the dressing is then secured in place often with a tie over bandage. This type of bandage should be changed daily. Once a good bed of what we call "granulation tissue" has developed (as in the second picture), and the skin edges are close enough to close, then the skin edges can be brought together and closed. Depending on the individual and on the size of the wound, this can take anywhere from a couple of days, to a week or more. Hi there. Not sure how the wound occurred but it is definitely a wound! I would not be too worried just yet. It does not look infected. At. This point, I would surgically explore that lesion. There may be a foreign body in there, there may be a small mass or tumor inside, but at least it should be surgically debrided. Debriding it will remove all of the dead necrotic tissue. It should be kept clean by doing daily bandage changes and your pet likely needs a different antibiotic. If this was a routine infection that was responsive to Cephalexin, it would be better by now.

The spot at the top of the picture appears to be a cut or abrasion. The protruding pieces are likely pieces of pad that have not fallen off on their own. I would recommend soaking this in a betadine / saline mixture (mixed to give a light brown solution). I would soak this for 5-10 minutes twice daily until healed. I would also apply Sentry Wound ointment, which you can find at PetCo and apply twice daily. If this does not improve or it worsens, please have Bane examined by a veterinarian so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes, rest and some topical antiseptic such as Vetericyn wound spray are enough for minor wounds on the paw pads to heal. Vetericyn is available at most Petco locations and on Petco.com, so just apply as labeled topically; it is not harmful if small amounts are swallowed were she to lick it off of the area, though Alivas may need an Elizabethan collar to prevent her from licking the wound to allow it to heal. If the pain persists or the wound continues draining for longer than 1-2 more days, I would recommend having her seen by your Veterinarian, sooner if either her pain or the drainage worsen. Keep her activity level down until healed, especially off of rocks and other rough/sharp surfaces. I hope this helps!

Yes, I would be a bit worried. I suggest you take him back to your vet for a recheck exam. It is hard for me to give advice without seeing the issue. As a sdie note, if he is having issues with the E-collar you can try switching to a softer E-collar like this one: ( https://www.petco.com/shop/en/petcostore/product/dog/dog-health-and-wellness/dog-ecollars/all-four-paws-tan-comfy-cone-5000727--1 ) Some dogs don't like the hard cones. If he needs a bandage then the vet can place one so that his foot doesn't swell. They may not want to do this as bandaging can cause moisture build up. You will need them to make that determination.
