Will my black dog's hair grow back black after a fungal infection?

There is no injection to make hair grow. Based on the way your dog's skin looks to me, I would be concerned about severe allergies or a hormone issue like Cushings or Hypothyroidism causing the hair loss. Fungal or yeast overgrowth is usually an issue secondary to something else like allergies or low thyroid gland production. Make sure your vet has tested BamBam for low thyroid at a minimum. If the hair loss is caused by hypothyroidism or Cushings disease the hair is not going to grow back on its own without treatment. If these endocrine issues are not going on in BamBam, and the skin infection has been adequately treated, then the hair should grow back with time. Some hair follicles take weeks/months to start producing hair again, so it takes time. Hope that helps!

Hello. It is not uncommon when there has been damage to the hair follicles, that the hair can regrow a different color or even a different texture. I have seen pets that have sustained severe bites or burns regrow coats lighter or darker, but the most amazing one was a little short haired rat terrier that regrew a coat like a little lamb. It did stay this way for his life, but never seemed to affect him. I would not be too concerned as this is just the way Brownie's bodied repaired the damaged follicles. The skin is discolored but doesn't appear unhealthy. it doesn't not look rough or scarred so there is a good chance the hair will grow back. Although sometimes it grows back a different color or texture it will take a few more weeks before you see hair start to fill in.

Hi and thanks for posting! If the infection on his tail is healing or is close to fully healed, it may take 2-4 weeks for the hair to grow back in that area. Sometimes, however if the infection is severe enough and leaves scar tissue in the area, the hair may not grow back fully. I hope this helps and best of luck!

For some dogs the coat and pigment in the fur can change with age. For some dogs the coat will also grow back differently after a close shave. As long as the skin underneath the dark hairs appears normal I wouldn’t be concerned about a change in fur color.

There can be many causes of increased pigmentation in dogs, mostly relating to chronic inflammation. This can be caused by fleas, mange, lice, infections (bacterial or yeast), ringworm, allergies, among others. If the spots seem to be increasing, I recommend that Sophie be evaluated by a veterinarian. Also, make sure she is on a good flea preventative (topicals should not be applied for 3 days before or after bathing to ensure good absorption). While you wait for your vet appointment, you can try a medicated shampoo like Dechra MalAcetic Ultra Shampoo - lather on the skin, let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.

There are a number of things that could cause excessive itching with hair loss and blackened skin. The most common possibilities would include allergies, fleas, a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). If she's also acting weak, I would be concerned that she may also have some type of systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, anemia, hypothyroidism, or Cushing's disease. It would be best to have her examined by a vet as soon as possible - he/she can do some simple skin tests as well as blood work or other testing if needed to help determine what's wrong and get her started on appropriate treatment.
