Why did my dog's hair grow back black and silky after a pimple?

For some dogs the coat and pigment in the fur can change with age. For some dogs the coat will also grow back differently after a close shave. As long as the skin underneath the dark hairs appears normal I wouldn’t be concerned about a change in fur color.

Hi and thank you for your question! Sometimes dog hair can change in color and texture when they age just like human hair can. I wouldn't worry too much about the hair change unless it appears like he is loosing fur, the skin around the fur is red, inflamed, scabbing, or infected-you will want to see your veterinarian if that is the case.

Hair coat color change can be due to numerous factors including (but not limited to) genetics, environmental temperature, previous trauma to hair follicles, systemic hormonal disease, etc. If this was sudden that the hair coat changed color, I would recommend having Cookie examined by a veterinarian and have her blood tested just to be on the safe side so that any recommendations for additional diagnostics and treatments can be made. Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Pigmentary changes to the hair/coat are not that unusual, especially if there are no underlying lesions. If your pet ever sustained an injury to that area in the past, even a mild infection or burn, the hair follicles can be affected & color can change months to even years later. So, if she is not bothered by the area, you feel no lumps, bumps, roughness, see no redness or dermatitis, then this may just be a normal change in an unusual area. Just mention it to your vet at your next visit. Take care.

Dogs can experience changes in the color and consistency of the hair coat for a huge number of reasons. It is important to determine if Trey is itchy, losing hair, and developing redness or scaling of his skin, as these can all raise or lower suspicions of some conditions. Possible causes include hypothyroidism, Cushing's disease, mange, bacterial and/or fungal skin infections, sebaceous adenitis, nutritional changes, or many other conditions. While this is certainly not an emergency, I recommend discussing Trey's coat changes with his veterinarian, as he may need some diagnostic testing to get to the bottom of the situation. Unfortunateely this sometimes happens with a fungal infection. the fungus likely had destroyed the hair roots in which the pigment is that makes the skin and hair growing from it black. There is a chance that during the nexr shed of your dog , it comes in black, but there is also a chance that it will stay white. That is the way fungi can damage skin. There is no medication to remedy that.

I'm glad pickle seems to be recovered from her initial illness. Many times shaved hair doesn't always grow back at the same texture it was before or may grow in thinner. Discuss with her vet if a fish oil or fatty acid supplement may be ok to add as this may help hair growth. But don't add any supplements without checking with her vet.
