Will my dog's fur grow back after a tail skin infection heals?

Hello and thank you for your questions about Gunner. I cannot see your previous question but I will answer this question as best I can. Skin infections can vary in healing times based upon how long the infection is present, how deep in the skin the bacteria have penetrated and if there are any underlying allergies. Typically treatment for skin issues is 10 days - 6 weeks. If there are underlying skin issues (or even endocrine gland issues) then the condition will become reoccurring and difficult to clear. For general purpose, oatmeal types shampoos tend to do well for most dogs as it generally doesn't overly dry the skin. I would recommend to have an appointment with a local vet to examine Gunner's skin and see if they feel additional treatment or medicated shampoo is needed. Aside from allergies and endocrine disorders, parasites and fungus can also cause hair loss. I hope this has answered your question. Take care!

It will eventually fall off and the hair grow back if this was just a simple infection. If you do not find any discharge and it does not smell bad, this is likely healing so it would be best to not take the scab off. Good luck and have a great day!

It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. The hair is expected to grow back when the allergies and infections resolve. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

It looks as though Danny has a skin infection in that area. Your veterinarian will be able to prescribe topical and oral antibiotics that will help treat the infection, allow the skin to heal and the hair to grow back.

It could have been from an allergy that caused Buddy to chew the hair off of the tail. This could also be due to a skin infection, skin parasite or hormonal disease causing the hair loss. I would monitor this for now and if it does not resolve or if it worsens, I would have a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. These lesions may be in the healing process. Keep an eye on them for a few days, if they aren't getting better or seem to be spreading, have Curtis re-examined by the vet. He may need a biopsy to figure out what the active process is.

Unfortunateely this sometimes happens with a fungal infection. the fungus likely had destroyed the hair roots in which the pigment is that makes the skin and hair growing from it black. There is a chance that during the nexr shed of your dog , it comes in black, but there is also a chance that it will stay white. That is the way fungi can damage skin. There is no medication to remedy that.
