Why is my dog's skin dark and fur falling out? How to regrow it?

Unfortunateely this sometimes happens with a fungal infection. the fungus likely had destroyed the hair roots in which the pigment is that makes the skin and hair growing from it black. There is a chance that during the nexr shed of your dog , it comes in black, but there is also a chance that it will stay white. That is the way fungi can damage skin. There is no medication to remedy that.

It looks as though Danny has a skin infection in that area. Your veterinarian will be able to prescribe topical and oral antibiotics that will help treat the infection, allow the skin to heal and the hair to grow back.

There is something called post-clipping alopecia that is most likely the problem. Happens quite frequently after shaving for a fentanyl patch. The reason the hair fails to regrow is unknown. Total hair regrowth may take 6 to 24 months, although most animals regrow hair within 12 months. Some things that may help the hair to grow back faster would be: * vigorous brushing of the area * massage * hydrotherapy with warm water * covering the bald area with a sweater to increase skin temperature All of those things increase blood flow to the skin and may stimulate hair regrowth in some cases. So, give it some more time and if after about 10-12 months the hair has not grown back then speak to your vet about testing for underlying diseases like a low thyroid, cushing's disease, etc. Hope this helps. Skin infections can vary in healing times based upon how long the infection is present, how deep in the skin the bacteria have penetrated and if there are any underlying allergies. Typically treatment for skin issues is 10 days - 6 weeks. If there are underlying skin issues (or even endocrine gland issues) then the condition will become reoccurring and difficult to clear. For general purpose, oatmeal types shampoos tend to do well for most dogs as it generally doesn't overly dry the skin. I would recommend to have an appointment with a local vet to examine Gunner's skin and see if they feel additional treatment or medicated shampoo is needed. Unfortunately there isn't anything that can help the fur to regrow. You can try some omega 3 fatty acids or fish oil. If the hairloss hasn't been seen by a vet recently I would have your vet take a look at it to ensure it isn't a thyroid problem or something else. If it is truly just due to the injury, you can put some baby sunscreen on her to prevent any burns if she has light colored skin. Most dark colored skin will not burn. I hope this helps!

The darkening of the skin is due to a chronic inflammation, and the darker hair regrow could be completely normal. That could be completely response after the skin ''injuries'' you described. If she is not showing any other sign I would not be worried about it.

Some issues such as metabolic illnesses can cause hair loss and skin darkening. You may also see changes in weight, appetite, water intake, etc. Other potential causes include parasites, allergies, skin infections, etc. Since there is both a change to skin and coat, having Trixie examined by your vet and samples taken or bloodwork done may help narrow down the cause so it can be treated.
