Are Amoxicillin and Destolit safe for my Border Collie's liver tumor?

Hi there. Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is a very safe antibiotic and is not very hard on the kidneys and liver. It can cause gastric upset if given on an empty stomach, so I would recommend just giving with some food. If you see changes in urination or drinking habits you can have him checked out for his kidneys, but this medication should be fine for Danny. I would only just check out how much Danny weighs. The normal dose for Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is 12.5mg/kg, so I would be giving 375mg every 12 hours to Danny assuming he weighs 30kg. Antibiotics have very large ranges in terms of dosing, and different countries will have slightly different formulations, so I would check this with your vet, as the dose may be higher with the specific compounding that your vet uses.

If there is an indication for the doxycycline, as it sounds like your vet suspects there is--meaning your vet suspects that there is a bacterial infection that may respond to doxycycline-- then it is appropriate. Ideally, a more definitive diagnosis would be reached. Has Casper had an abdominal ultrasound? Is he showing symptoms of illness and that is why your vet ran the bloodwork in the first place? I presume that Casper has a history of elevated liver values since he has been on Denamarin. It may be beneficial to consider a consultation with an internal medicine specialist. Destolit is a medication to try to stimulate movement of bile out of the gall bladder. Synulox is an antibiotic. These can be used if the veterinarian thinks that there may be an infection in the body or sludge in the gall bladder causing Billy's illness. A common side effect of synulox is vomiting. You can try giving it with food to avoid causing nausea. However, the worsening of his previous symptoms may indicate that the medications are not helping and that his disease is progressing. I would recommend that you discuss this with your vet to see if there is another treatment or other diagnostics that can be run to see what else can be done.

This drug is cleared primarily through the kidneys so sometimes decreasing the dose is recommended for dogs in severe kidney failure, but it is not contraindicated for dogs with liver or kidney disease. This is an antibiotic so while it might help treat a secondary infection and therefore decrease itching it is not a medication specifically for itching.

Denamarin is a good choice for Dahilia. This drug speeds up liver cells healing and protects healthy cells from getting damaged. Any wide-spectrum antibiotic can be used. Amoxicillin/clavulanic acid for 2-3 weeks would be a good choice. If her blood results showed also jaundice, she should be put on ursodeoxycholic acid tablets.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! My fist recommendation would be to call the vet to double check because amoxicillin has a very broad dose range. This is a little bit higher dose than I usually use but may be exactly what your vet wanted. (I would do about 2 cc’s twice daily for most patients her size.) There is not much harm in higher dosing, other than an increased risk of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea so don’t worry about poisoning Lupita. Twice daily dosing for the amoxicillin is definitely correct as this drug needs to be in the bloodstream for a sustained time to work properly. The prednisone dose is fine. Hello. The normal dose is 12.5mg/kg, however you can give a higher dose as well, sometimes up to 20mg/kg (however this is usually reserved for very severe infections and given IV). A dose for a 34kg dog would be 425mg - so approximately 500mg, twice daily for 10 days. At this dose his kidney/liver should not be affected.
