Is my dog's terbinafine dose safe for kidneys? Any kidney supplements?

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | 3 years and 3 months old

Vet also prescribe terbinafine 250mg twice a day and his weight is 39kg and on internet it's written for human adults only one dosage of 250mg a day is sufficient as it is hard medicine so if for human 250mg single dosage is hard then for dog whole just 39kg dosage of 250mg twice a day would be double hard to affect his kidneys? Also please tell me tonics or syrups like for liver we have lot of liver tonic similarly what tonics are available or supplements to protect dog kidneys from disease

The dose of terbinafine your vet prescribed is appropriate for Danny's size. This medication has a wide range of use in the literature, and vets will choose the appropriate dose for the patient and the infection they are treating. Dogs do not necessarily metabolize medications the same way people do - so often require different strength or frequency in their dosing compared to the human dose.

Terbinafine is generally well tolerated by dogs, so I would not recommend adding any additional tonics or medications unless your vet guides you on this. The best way you can help support Danny's kidneys is to simply provide clean safe drinking water available at all times.

If you are concerned, you might ask your vet to run some baseline bloodwork on Danny to ensure his organs are functioning properly, and you could repeat this bloodwork after his course of medication. This should provide peace of mind to make sure Danny is tolerating his medication!

Is amoxicillin safe for my dog's liver and kidneys long-term?

Hi there. Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is a very safe antibiotic and is not very hard on the kidneys and liver. It can cause gastric upset if given on an empty stomach, so I would recommend just giving with some food. If you see changes in urination or drinking habits you can have him checked out for his kidneys, but this medication should be fine for Danny. I would only just check out how much Danny weighs. The normal dose for Amoxicillin/Clavulanic Acid is 12.5mg/kg, so I would be giving 375mg every 12 hours to Danny assuming he weighs 30kg. Antibiotics have very large ranges in terms of dosing, and different countries will have slightly different formulations, so I would check this with your vet, as the dose may be higher with the specific compounding that your vet uses.

Is my dog's extreme thirst from cephalexin or terbinafine medicine?

The cephalexin generally does not cause an increased thirst but the Terbinafine I have seen this as a side effect. It will not cause any harm with the increased thirst and should resolve once the course of treatment is completed. Should I give my dog supplements for liver and kidney health?

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Yes, that product should be pretty safe. However, I don't recommend giving supplements such as this without being directed by a vet. The most important way to support Bruno's organ function is with a good high quality food, and good preventative care (disease prevention through vaccination, parasite control, etc). Milk thistle is a great liver support, but the other ingredients have limited data in dogs and, while probably safe, I would not recommend them.

My dog's creatinine is high. Should I continue his liver supplement?

This supplement shouldn't increase Danny's creatinine level. His creatinine level is 0.05 points above normal, and in my opinion it is not significant with a normal BUN. A urine specific gravity would help to determine if it is significant, as well as rechecking this value in one week to see if it is going up. I wouldn't not start kidney supplements until we know it is an issue. Increasing water consumption is the first line in preventing kidney disease.
