Should I feed my 9-month-old dog dry food, wet food, or both?

I recommend you feed dry food that is made for xtra small dogs like this one from Royal Canin. Yes, you can mix some canned food into it as well. It is best to feed multiple small meals per days with these little micro/mini breeds as they tend to get low blood sugar if they go too long between meals. Small meals 3-4 times per day is best - mostly dry food and just a touch of the wet food. Do this until about 6 months of age then you can go to feeding twice per day. ( ) ( ) Please don't give grain free diets. They are not necessary and there is actually a new study out that has linked grain free diets to heart disease/failure in dogs. Hope this helps. I recommend a small breed diet and to stick with one of the higher quality brands. I like Royal Canin because the diets have high quality, easy to digest protein and contain an excellent fiber blend. Most pets on this diet will have great stool quality and minimal amounts of stool because there's not a lot of filler. They actually carry a line for Chihuahuas. I also like Purina Pro Plan. Coco should eat twice a day and should eat puppy food until he is 1 year old. I hope this helps.

Hello. At this age, a puppy should be fed 3 times a day with limited treats. You can transition him to twice a day feedings somewhere between 16 - 20 weeks of age. As long as the food you choose is a well-balanced puppy food, such as Science Diet, Royal Canin or Purina, you can continue to feed Roman the canned, or a combination of canned & dry. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Alex is adorable! Congratulations! I would choose a high quality commercial puppy food. I like Hill's science diet, Royal Canin and Purina. Since Alex is a small breed I would choose a dry and a canned to mix until he is about 4 months then change to all dry. I would also feed him small frequent meals, maybe about 3-4 times per day until he is 14-16 weeks. Toy breed puppies can suffer from low blood sugar. This means that you will likely get a different answer from each person you ask. My recommendations are to get the best quality dry dog food you can, and feed that. As long as your dog is happy, eating, having normal poops, is a good weight and has a good hair coat, don't worry about other details. Raw meat of any kind is very dangerous and causes severe infections, and bones of any kind (cooked or raw) are very dangerous as well, so I would avoid those. If you would like to feed some meat or vegetables in addition to the dry food you can. Cook the meat as you would for yourself to eat, but without any spices or seasoning (garlic and onions are toxic to dogs), and vegetables like potatoes, carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, pumpkin, are all good as well (cooked or raw). Most commercially available canned foods are still balanced diets. As long as Zoey is eating a food formulated for growing puppies, she should still be meeting all of her nutritional needs. However, being a small breed dog, she is naturally more prone to developing dental issues as she ages. Dry food is a bit more abrasive to the teeth, which will help to decrease tartar formation. You can try mixing a small amount of dry food with her wet food to try to tempt her to eat it. Otherwise, be sure to brush her teeth daily to maintain oral health. Be sure that you are feeding a high quality brand of food (Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Royal Canin are some of my favorites), and keep Zoey on puppy food until she is 1 year old. Anytime you change flavors or brands of food, mix the old and new foods together over 5-7 days for a slower transition to decrease the incidence of vomiting and diarrhea. Wet food should be just fine provided that you stay on top of brushing her teeth. :-) I hope that all goes well!
