Is it normal for my 4-week-old puppy to sleep a lot and not eat much?

At 5 weeks of age it is normal for Dexter to sleep most of the day and only be active 2-3 hours of the day. Most puppies aren’t weaned from their mom’s until 8 weeks of age. First vaccines aren’t given until 6-8 weeks of age so you are right in scheduling your vet appointment for next week unless he starts to have diarrhea before then. Definitely feed him 3 times a day or leave dry food out for him all day to prevent hypoglycemia /low blood sugar which is common in puppies and can result in severe weakness and even seizures. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Pingo is very adorable! At 6 weeks of age, Pingo is still very young. It is normal to play for short periods and sleep a lot. Just like a human baby. Also Pingo is a small breed dog and her stomach is small. I would be sure to feed her small amount every 6-8 hours until she is 12 weeks old. The volume will be small due to her size. If you are still worried about how much she is eating then repost with the total daily volume she is eating in cups. Athena is such a cute puppy! Puppies will typically nap quite a bit during the day, which is normal as they are growing. If you think Athena's appetite is decreased then I would get her seen by your vet to ensure she is healthy and that there are no problems to be concerned about. She may have preference towards certain textures of food as well. If you have not tried canned food (either chunky or pate form) I would try this and see if she will eat this more readily. Puppies typically nurse every 2-4 hours until 3-4 weeks old then it can be every 4-6 hours. If he has a good suckle reflex that is a good sign and he is probably hungry. You will use puppy milk replacement until he is weaned which generally starts around 4-5 weeks of age the. Transition to soft puppy food and decrease milk feedings. They do have to stay warm. Their normal body temperature is 100 so that can be a sign if shaking. You have to gently wipe their behind and probates to stimulate them to go to the bathroom. This should be done after every meal. They generally sleep a lot and as they get older and more coordinated then they stay awake longer

In terms of the appetite, this is sometimes not uncommon in puppies when they are in their new environment. I recommend that you continue to monitor him for now, especially if you just got him. If these symptoms of not eating well and sleeping a large portion of the day do not improve, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Lola is extremely cute! Congratulations! At 4 weeks of age, Lola should still be nursing. Weaning usually begins at four weeks and lasts until about 7 or 8 weeks. Given this, I would recommend bottle/syringe feeding with a puppy Milk Replacement formula until Lola is stronger and can eat regular puppy food. Bottle feeding can be tricky and needs to be done properly. If he is just starting to grow teeth there will be nothing to hold his tongue in his mouth so sticking out is not abnormal.
