My new 7-week puppy sleeps a lot and won't eat. Is this normal?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is not unusual for puppies to sleep for a very large portion of the day. In terms of the appetite, this is sometimes not uncommon in puppies when they are in their new environment. I recommend that you continue to monitor him for now, especially if you just got him. If these symptoms of not eating well and sleeping a large portion of the day do not improve, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. Hopefully this is all transient and he will be back to normal soon. Good luck!

If she is truly only four weeks old then she probably got separated from her mom a little early. You may have to try some soft canned food or even a little dog milk replacement in order to encourage her to eat. It is very normal for these guys to sleep a lot and play a little and as they get older they will start playing more and more. If it any point she is not eating at all or playing then I would have her checked out by your bed. When she become six weeks old she will need her first set of shots and to be dewormed by your vet as well. I hope this helps!

It is not unusual for puppies to not eat great as they get used to eating solid food. I would recommend you try different kinds of both kibble and canned food. If there is no improvement and he continues to not eat, I would recommend you consider having him evaluated by a veterinarian for that purpose and also to possibly establish care with a veterinarian for recommendations on preventative and early life care. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Pingo is very adorable! At 6 weeks of age, Pingo is still very young. It is normal to play for short periods and sleep a lot. Just like a human baby. Also Pingo is a small breed dog and her stomach is small. I would be sure to feed her small amount every 6-8 hours until she is 12 weeks old. The volume will be small due to her size. If you are still worried about how much she is eating then repost with the total daily volume she is eating in cups. At 5 weeks of age it is normal for Dexter to sleep most of the day and only be active 2-3 hours of the day. Most puppies aren’t weaned from their mom’s until 8 weeks of age. First vaccines aren’t given until 6-8 weeks of age so you are right in scheduling your vet appointment for next week unless he starts to have diarrhea before then. Definitely feed him 3 times a day or leave dry food out for him all day to prevent hypoglycemia /low blood sugar which is common in puppies and can result in severe weakness and even seizures. If she is the complete opposite than she was before, there is a good chance that there is a medical explanation for this, but because the symptoms are so general it would be hard to give you a possible diagnosis, the best way would be to take her to the vet for a checkup, she is probably dew to a vaccine anyway real soon.

Decreased appetite is concerning in a puppy because of the potential very serious gastrointestinal infections such as parvovirus that they can get. Monitor him closely for progression of his already decreased appetite, nausea (which may manifest as drooling, decreased appetite and lip smacking), vomiting, severe lethargy and/or diarrhea. If any of these signs are observed, have him evaluated right away. I think that if he is otherwise doing fine, then it is ok to monitor him for now. If he has not improved by tomorrow, then have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Make sure that he is drinking water to avoid dehydration. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!
