What to do if my 5-week-old puppy won't eat and sleeps a lot?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | 1 month and 6 days old

Hi, my 5 weeks old Beagle ate his dinner by 1am today, Royal canin. Later it pooped 4times, soft stools with no blood or mucous. It's been more than 12 hours but he has not eaten anything. He is playing actively when he is awake and sleeping most of the time. Should I not feed him during that time? Also he is sleeping all the time other than his active time which is maximum 2-3 hours a day. Is it normal? I'm yet to vaccinate him, got VET appointment next week since he is just 5weeks old.

At 5 weeks of age it is normal for Dexter to sleep most of the day and only be active 2-3 hours of the day. Most puppies aren’t weaned from their mom’s until 8 weeks of age. First vaccines aren’t given until 6-8 weeks of age so you are right in scheduling your vet appointment for next week unless he starts to have diarrhea before then. Definitely feed him 3 times a day or leave dry food out for him all day to prevent hypoglycemia /low blood sugar which is common in puppies and can result in severe weakness and even seizures. Good luck!
