My 2-week-old puppy twitches in sleep. Is it normal? Still hungry?

It can be normal to twitch in their sleep. Puppies and dogs dream, and she may be reacting to the dreams. My own dog sometimes barks in her sleep. As for the pot belly, she may have intestinal worms which is common in puppies. That would cause a pot belly. Have her seen by the vet to get a deworming treatment. Her stool sounds ok. Unfortunately puppies are very fragile, and some out of a litter may not survive. It is very important for the mother to eat so she can provide enough milk for the puppies, and it's possible that if she is a bad eater, she does not have enough energy to produce enough milk for the puppies leading those two to die. She needs to be on a high quality puppy formulated food to meet her nutritional needs when nursing puppies, and I would put her on a puppy food right away. You will slowly have to mix it in with her regular diet over a couple of days so she does not get sick from the sudden change in food. Weigh the puppy daily, and if it's not gaining weight each day, you will need to supplement it with puppy formula. You can get that from a pet store or grocery store, and I recommend KMR. You would know if the puppy was hungry if it was crying all the time, not just whimpering in its sleep. Puppies and dogs dream, and they can make nosies in response to their dreams, so that may be why he's whimpering. A vet visit for both would also be a good idea just to make sure everything is ok. No need to worry! Hiccups are common in puppies. The twitching and making noises is normal too. Puppies and dogs dream, so these movements and sounds can be in response to dreams they are having. I have a dog who barks in her sleep sometimes, and her legs move. I like to think she is chasing something :-)

Puppies sleep a lot as they have a lot of growing to do and they get activity bursts which are exhausting. So it is not unusual for a puppy to sleep a lot and as long as it is bright and happy and playful when it is awake, all is well. Twitching while asleep is also normal, as dogs do dream and that often shows by twitching, even barking or squealing while a sleep.

Puppies can twitch in their sleep due to dreams they are having, so it may not be that Cali was having a seizure. Sometimes puppies can be a deep sleep and it can take longer to walk them, but I would keep an eye on her to be safe. Because I can't see her in person, I can't say for certain she didn't have a seizure, but you wouldn't have been able to wake her at all if she was having one. If you are very concerned, have her seen by a vet in the morning for a health check.

If she is truly only four weeks old then she probably got separated from her mom a little early. You may have to try some soft canned food or even a little dog milk replacement in order to encourage her to eat. It is very normal for these guys to sleep a lot and play a little and as they get older they will start playing more and more. If it any point she is not eating at all or playing then I would have her checked out by your bed. When she become six weeks old she will need her first set of shots and to be dewormed by your vet as well. I hope this helps!

Having a vomit or two after deworming can be normal, however if it continues or if Kain is acting weak or tired then I would get him to a vet right away. Puppies often twitch in their sleep, and they are dreaming. You can try waking him up during this twitching, if it stops right away it was just dreaming, if it continues it is a seizure or twitching that needs to be seen by a vet right away.
