My weak, malnourished kitten has white stool. What should I feed her?

Hello, & thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would stop the egg white & just stay with the KMR. In another week, start introducing some canned kitten food mixed with the KMR to wean the kitten from the milk. I would also deworm the kitten now with pyrantal pamoate using 1 ml per 10 pounds of body weight ( Kitti will probably only need 0.1-0.3 mls ). Have a sample of the kittens stool examined by your veterinarian to check for other parasites, like coccidia. Hope she is doing well soon. Take care.

Congrats on your new kitten! Since Stella was on Hill's before, it's not likely the cause of her soft stools. Intestinal parasites are common in young kittens, and that could be a cause of her soft stool. Check with the shelter to see if she has recently received a deworming treatment, and if she has not, I would give her one. If she is up to date on her deworming treatments, keep an eye on her stools and if they become diarrhea, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck, I hope this helps.

Kitties can't digest human milk well. This is likely what gave your little one diarrhea. I would switch back to the KMR and start mixing in small amounts of wet kitty starter formula food. You can also mix in 1-2 tsp of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) to help harden her stools and continue feeding her kitten only food. If he stools are not getting better after 24-48 hrs then its best to take her to your vet for a short course of antibiotics to get her bacterial flora back to normal. If your kitten doesn't have a mother to feed her, you need to feed a formula made for kitten (KMR). You need to feed by a bottle every 2-4 hours and then wipe her bottom after wth a wet cloth to stimulate her to poop and pee. Make sure she stays warm because she cannot regulate her temperature. In another week you can start giving a dewormer for round worms and hook worms (follow the instructions on the bottle). At 8 weeks, she needs to see a vet to start vaccines. Congratulations on adding Poopie to your family! Given how thin she is, I am not surprised all she wants to do is eat. Feed her a high quality diet. These diets will be easier to digest and this will mean that she gets more nutrients. I recommend to feed her Royal Canin Kitten food or Purina ProPlan. Feed her a mixture of canned and dry food. You could also give her a probiotic which can help make the bacteria in her gut healthy. Lastly, follow up by having her stool checked for parasites again one week after she takes her last deworming medication. It is possible that the egg yolk was too rich for her and is now causing the diarrhea. Cats are extremely clean and she is likely licking herself to remove the leaking stool. Since she is so young and the diarrhea is so bad I would take her to your Vet for medications. I would try to not give her table food since she seems to have a sensitive stomach. Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, metabolic conditions. I recommend to have Milly examined by the veterinarian and bring in a fresh stool sample to have her checked for parasites. Cats who have been outside a lot often have worms and protozoal parasites (some of which can spread to humans). Diet changes can also cause diarrhea. Lastly, kittens can be prone to bacterial over growth and any diarrhea lasting longer than 48 hours generally benefits from an antibiotic. You can try feeling Milly a bland diet. A bland diet can consist of 25% boiled white meat chicken and 75% boiled white rice. This should all be plain. A good diet in general is Royal Canin. It is low residue and highly digestible and you can transition her to this diet once she is feeling better. I hope Milly starts feeling better quickly!
