Is it safe to put two mother cats and their kittens in one room?

You need to keep both of the separate for now, they each need to focus on their kittens fully. Put each in their own room with their own food, water, and litter box as well as any kittens who are nursing.

You really need to keep them separated - I agree 100%. I would put mom and kittens in the kennel but you need to make sure that mom has access to a litter box and her food/water and as the kittens get a bit older she will need to be able to get up and walk away from them at times during the day or they will drive her nuts. So, she cannot be in there until the kittens are weaned. I would say only for a week or two (maybe up to three). I don't know what the situation is, if you bred the cats on purpose or if they got pregnant by accident or what but please keep in mind that if you don't have the appropriate facilities for cats to be queening then you should get them spayed. This situation of trying to keep them separated is going to cause you a major headache. Also, keep in mind that will come back into heat sometimes almost immediately after queening so they can get pregnant again if there is a male cat in the house that has access to them or if they get outside. Yes this will be ok. Cats mamas tend to share their litters if its in the family. You may want to start looking for homes already, before they are born. the mamas can be spayed about three weeks after having kittens and will continue to feed their babies. Please leave the kittens with their mothers until they are about 10 to 12 weeks old as they will be taught everything they need to know (using the litter box, what to eat and what not, what is dangerous and what not, etc) and the kittens, even when they are weaned, will still run to mommy for comfort when they are upset. it is ok to sleep with your adult cats most of the time. Eventually the kittens will probably come lie with you as well. In the beginning there will probably be hisses etc. but eventually over time the cats probably will take turns. Do not lock them inot the 'safe room', keep it open, so they can start to get more couragsous venturing out and start to interact with the adult cats. It will take time, but eventually they will all at least tolerate each other.

You can move the kittens - if you are planning to socialize the kittens and either keep them yourself or adopt them out it would actually be ideal to handle them when they are young. It is unlikely that the mother will reject them, but she may try to move them back unless you cut off access to the other room. Congratulations on your new kittens! the mother doesn't necessarily need to be in the dark, but she should have a quiet place where she feels safe to care for her kittens, especially if she is a first time mom. For this reason, if you have a separate room where she can stay or visit it may be best for the first week or two to keep her in this room when she is with the kittens so she doesn't feel threatened or nervous about her kittens coming to harm.

Newborn kittens cannot regulate their body temperature, so the room they are kept in must be quite warm, between 88-92F. Keep them completely separate from the other cats, mother cats can be very protective of their kittens, and she may attack the other cats if they come to investigate the kittens. Best of luck.
