Why spay my dwarf cat if she's over a year and hasn't had heat?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed

We are about to buy a dwarf cat (Scottish fold father/tabby mother) who is just over a year old, not spayed, and has not yet been in heat. She will be a housecat, but we would like to know if we "must" spay her, or if she won't ever heat due to her condition or if we "should" spay her for her later comfort, as we most likely won't get another dwarf cat (and any other potential mate would bee too dangerous, right?). Is there anything else we should think about pertinent to this condition? Thanks!

Spaying can be beneficial in preventing some types of cancer and can also keep Penelope from accidentally getting pregnant if she were ever to get out of the house and go on adventure. It is also a good idea to research any common health issues for the breed to keep an eye out as well as schedule a complete exam with your vet to check for any potential issues behind her lack of a heat cycle as well as establish a baseline of health.

Since Baby is over 1 year, she can be neutered any time now. I would recommend that she is neutered for medical reason, first the high risk of developing mammary cancer which is malignant in cats and second uterus cancer and/or possible uterus infection. You should get her spayed, no questions about it, there is no high risk in having that surgery done at her age, she is still very young and it is a very simple surgery. cats are in very high risks of mammary gland tumors if they are not spayed and this condition is almost always fatal.

What are the risks of not spaying my female cat if she won't breed?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is ultimately your decision whether you want to spay Noushmc or not. Most people find they do not like the behavior their cats display when in heat. Sometimes the cats will urine mark when intact and it leaves the uterus at risk for an infection (pyometra) when she is older. There are cats who have no problems. I hope this helps!

My cat had surgery. Can she have more kittens? Spaying and breed size?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If she hasn't been spayed yet she should be able to still have kittens. Her breed is only a problem if she or the male cat has large skulls that they may not pass in the birth canal. It is not too early to spay her, in fact I usually recommend spaying at 6months. The more heat cycles so goes through the more at risk she is for mammary and uterine cancers as she ages. My recommendation is to spay her soon. Good luck and kisses to Sussie!

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is absolutely possible for animals to be hermaphrodites or "intersex", just like humans. This could lead to her being naturally sterile. There are blood tests that can tell if a cat has been spayed. Sometimes kittens are spayed when they are very young and better at healing their surgery scars. I would recommend getting this test done to find out because if she is not spayed and does have a uterus, it can cause health problems later in life. I hope this helps!
