My cat never goes into heat. Could she be intersex or secretly spayed?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Turkish Van | Female | spayed | 5 years and 10 months old | 7.05 lbs

Hello, I adopted my cat 4 years ago (she was abandoned). In these 4 years she’s never been pregnant nor has she been in heat. The vet said there seem to be no signs that she is spayed. Whenever she sees tom cats, she gets rather upset. Is it possible she is neither male nor female? Are there any other possibilities? I was just curious, thanks :)

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach!
It is absolutely possible for animals to be hermaphrodites or "intersex", just like humans. This could lead to her being naturally sterile.

There are blood tests that can tell if a cat has been spayed. Sometimes kittens are spayed when they are very young and better at healing their surgery scars. I would recommend getting this test done to find out because if she is not spayed and does have a uterus, it can cause health problems later in life.

I hope this helps!
