My cat is in heat often. Is she too old to be spayed safely by a vet?

Pet's info: Cat | Bengal | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 8 months old | 8 lbs

Ariel is a snow marble Bengal Feline born on 02/17/2012. Unfortunately due to her brother from another mother getting an ear hematoma on her scheduled day to get spayed I was unable to bring her in and my vet refused to spay her following stating she was to old and it would be a high risk surgery. Ariel and Prince get along perfectly like siblings and Prince the brown spotted Bengal was neutered since they met. Ariel still goes into heat several times a year what should I do for her that is best

You should get her spayed, no questions about it, there is no high risk in having that surgery done at her age, she is still very young and it is a very simple surgery. cats are in very high risks of mammary gland tumors if they are not spayed and this condition is almost always fatal.

At 4 months of age you still have a few months to decide before she will be old enough to have it done anyways. But there are several health benefits to staying her. It can decrease the chance if manmary cancer in the future... if cats get mammary tumors it is 85% cancerous and aggressive. It will also decrease the risk of an infected uterus which can lead to sepsis and death if not caught in time... the treatment is an emergency spay! You will not have to deal with a cat in heat.. they are very loud and clingy and attract males from outside. There is little chance her personality will change from this procedure and the health benefits are worth it

When you spay an animal it is better and healthier for them. An intact female has a higher risk of mammary cancer and problems like a pyometra ( infection in the uterus).

I highly recommend all animals be spayed and neutered to have them live a healthier, longer life.

Since Baby is over 1 year, she can be neutered any time now. I would recommend that she is neutered for medical reason, first the high risk of developing mammary cancer which is malignant in cats and second uterus cancer and/or possible uterus infection. Can I spay my 4-year-old cat? Is she too old for the surgery?

At 4 years old, Bella is still a young cat! Since she has experienced numerous heat cycles, spaying will not reduce her risk of developing mammary cancers. However, it will prevent pregnancies and eliminate her chance of developing a pyometra, which is a serious uterine infection. I wouldn't anticipate any significant complications post-operatively, provided that her pre-operative exam and lab testing is within a normal range.

Is spaying a cat dangerous if she's very close to going into heat?

No, it's not dangerous for her to be spayed at this point in time. I have personally spayed cats who are in heat or approaching heat, and they have been just fine. There can be increased blood flow to the uterus if she is approaching her heat, but the vet will take precautions during surgery to prevent any problems. In addition, it's very difficult to predict exactly when a cat is going into heat next, so it may be Lucy isn't close to going into heat at this time. Any surgery does carry risks, even spaying when a cat isn't in heat, but your vet is aware of those risks and will do everything possible to minimize them. Ok, the question got confusing at the end so I'm sorry if I don't fully answer you. The answer is no, she cannot be pregnant and in heat at the same time. It is impossible. I suggest you have her spayed. It is a bit more risky of a surgery to spay them while pregnant or in-heat but I have done it thousands of times with no issues. If you are planning on spaying her, then I suggest you do so now.

My cat needs spaying. What are the risks of surgery and anesthesia?

The chances of something happening to Princess under anesthesia is very minute. That doesn't mean there is no chance. She is a living, breathing being and just like in humans, anything can happen. Veterinarians use very safe anesthetic drugs that are often what is used in humans despite all the safety precautions adverse reactions can still happen. While no one can give you a guarantee, I can tell you that the benefits of having her spayed far outweigh the risks of the procedure.
