How to tell if my cat is done delivering kittens and labor is over?

Hello. You can gently squeeze her abdomen working your way back from just behind the ribs toward her hind legs. If you do not feel any significant lumps, then she is done. Since she had no difficulties with the first ones, it is unlikely anyone was left behind. But if you do get concerned, the best is to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no way to tell by palpating Quinn's belly if she has any remaining kittens. The only way to know 100% is to take her to your Vet for an X-ray. Cats can delay labor for up to 24 hours, especially if stressed. Limit the number of people around her, have her in a quiet private room, do not let other animals in and check on her every 2-3 hours for the next 24 hours. If she has more kittens then she will give birth to them soon. I hope this helps!

Hello. It has been a few hours since you posted, so perhaps Quinn has already had the rest of her kittens. If not, & she remains comfortable, there are no obvious signs of contractions & she is happily nursing her kittens, there is not much you can or need to do. It is possible that what you felt was actually the uterus contracting down, a common mistake. If she goes 24 hours without delivering any more kittens & you still think you are feeling something, please have her examined by your veterinarian. She may require an injection to stimulate contractions, or she may need a C-section, but I think she may actually be done. See your vet if you have any concerns. Cats can delay labor for up to 24 hours. If you are still worried at the 24 hour mark make an appointment with your Vet for a belly X-ray to be sure she is finished. Good luck!

Poor kitty! If she is still having contractions and something seems to be protruding from her vagina, I would be concerned that she may still have one or more kittens inside her. This is potentially a life-threatening problem, so I would recommend taking her to the vet right away for an exam. He/she can take x-rays to see if there are still more kittens inside her. If so, she will likely need an emergency c-section to get them out.

Labor and delivery can take many hours depending on the mother and size of the litter. Contactions longer than 1hour without delivery of a kitten, restlessness and discomfort longer than 2hours or breaks between kittens of more than 4hours are all indications of the need for furhter action. Often getting them out of bed for gentle exercise/toileting/drink can help to kickstart labor again

Cats can sometimea eat while in labor,especially if they are not in active labor (not actively contracting/delivering). And Some cats will deliver kittens spread over a fairly long period (even 24 hours). So it is hard to know if Freya is done having kittens at this point. Good luck with all of your new additions.
