My cat had kittens, but I suspect more are coming. How can I help?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! There is no way to tell by palpating Quinn's belly if she has any remaining kittens. The only way to know 100% is to take her to your Vet for an X-ray. Cats can delay labor for up to 24 hours, especially if stressed. Limit the number of people around her, have her in a quiet private room, do not let other animals in and check on her every 2-3 hours for the next 24 hours. If she has more kittens then she will give birth to them soon. I hope this helps!

Hello. You can gently squeeze her abdomen working your way back from just behind the ribs toward her hind legs. If you do not feel any significant lumps, then she is done. Since she had no difficulties with the first ones, it is unlikely anyone was left behind. But if you do get concerned, the best is to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Cats can delay labor for up to 24 hours. If you are still worried at the 24 hour mark make an appointment with your Vet for a belly X-ray to be sure she is finished. Good luck!

If Lucy seems comfortable, is caring well for the kittens, & you do not see her pushing or having active contractions, then you can let her rest. You may be feeling a contracted uterine horn, or it may be another kitten, but if she is content then you can probably wait until the morning to have her checked out. Since it is already late, you would have to take her in to the emergency clinic anyway, but I would not recommend it, yet. If she becomes restless, vocal, & you see her pushjng for more than 30 minutes without producing a kitten, then take her in. Hopefully, this will not be necessary. Take care.

It sounds like she may have more to come. If she is actively pushing and there is no progress within 30 mins get help, otherwise if she is pacing and doing nothing I would give her an hour or so then have her checked.

If she recently had kittens, her nipples may feel more plump than they typically would, since she may have residual milk in there that needs to resorb or they may still be swollen from being recently suckled on by her kittens. If she truly has not urinated in 24 hours, I would be concerned. I would check around your house for any spots, as she may have urinated outside of the litter box, since this is a new home for her. Stress can slow cat's GI tracts, so she may not defecate for a few days. As long as she is acting normally and has a good appetite and is drinking water, I would continue to monitor her at home. If she ever becomes excessively lethargic, or loses her appetite, or vomits or has diarrhea, I would have her evaluated by your veterinarian. You could try confining her to a smaller area for a day or so to make sure she is urinating. I hope this is helpful!

Hello. This is always a bit of a mystery as to why this happens, but I personally have seen a queen have one kitten & deliver 4 more a full week later. Most often, a single birth is a premature kitten, but 2 kittens really confounds even this issue. If you can afford to have Lily seen by your veterinarian, an x-ray can show how many kittens are still present & an ultrasound can evaluate heartbeats. If the fetal heartbeats are around 180 - 200 beats per minute, then all is well. If the heartbeats are 170 or less, these kittens are stressed & need to come out. As long as Lily continues to act completely normal & there are no obvious vaginal discharges, then you can probably wait another day or so, but after that, I begin to get nervous.
