Shark cartilage for sensitive cat? Can my other cat take it too?

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 lbs

Hello, Is this joint supplement good for my cat, sweetie to try with a little salomn oil? The Chondroitin in it is made of shark cartilage. I sadly can not use cosequin on her because sweetie is sensitive to chrondroitin made of porcine or beef cartilage which is why I am considering this one. I also have a 5 year old male should I give it him to prevent joint issues already? The product is Wholistic Pet Organics Run Free: Joint Health Supplement - Natural Hip and Joint Supplement

Hi there! I’m not familiar with this brand, but those are good ingredients!

You could definitely start your other cat on it, as long as your regular vet has no concerns based on your cat’s health history. As long as he’s on a high quality food, it may not be necessary until you start seeing the early signs of arthritis or other joint troubles.

Shark cartilage is a holistic supplement utilized for joint support. I do not know of any scientific studies that have been conducted to support its usefulness, but I can think of no reason that it would cause harm to your dog. However, there may be better or more certain options to address inflammation such as a anti-inflammatory drug or glucosamine chondroitin. Hope this helps.

Hi and thanks for posting on PetCoach! The first thing I'd make sure Willow is eating is enough calcium. Be sure Willow is eating a kitten food until she is about 9 months to a year of age as kitten food has more calcium and other minerals in it that is required for healthy bone growth. A great supplement you may want to consider is DHA and EPA. Both are types of omega 3 fatty acid that are excellent for healthy development for multiple organ systems such as the heart, brain, skin, and bone/joint health. Can I give this supplement to my dog and cat while on other meds?

This medication is a supplement so if you follow the guidelines recommended by the manufacturer they are usually safe. However if your pets are sick I recommend contacting your veterinarian prior to starting any supplement. You should also mention any supplements your pet is taking with your veterinarian prior to giving any prescription medication as there could be some interaction.

Is collagen safe for my cat? What's the right dose and how to mix?

This is a new supplement in the human market, and as such there are no established dosing ranges for its use in pets. I cannot think of a reason that it would be unsafe since pet foods already contain animal sources of collagen, but if you can take a picture of the ingredients of the product you want to use, we can help you evaluate it. It may need to be dissolved in water, since adding it to wet food may cause a gelatin to form that the cats may not like.

Can my dog take cat joint supplements for luxating patella?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry to hear that Tron has luxated patellas, and I hope they do not bother him much. It appears to me that there isn't anything in those toxic to dogs, and your veterinarian may use the cat version in order to have an easier dose for smaller dogs. That said, it would be a good idea to call your vet tomorrow and make sure they meant to script it this way and to make sure they are okay with you continuing the supplement as it is a script.
