Why does my new rescue cat get zoomies and run wildly indoors?

If she's alone during the day she probably has excess energy. I do not think this is a medical problem. Try having her play with a laser pointer, throw toys or treats for her to chase and try to get her to exercise earlier in the day. As she ages she will outgrow this behavior. Cats often sleep all day then are active at night. Don't try to catch her or control her as when they are like this she may scratch or bite. Thanks for using PetCoach! I lovingly refer to these episodes as “the zoomies”. Almost all dogs have them at some time or another. They happen more often in puppies and young adults but can happen at any age. Even though Chewy may seem like he is suddenly possessed, it’s a good outlet of energy and good exercise. So if it’s not hurting or bothering anyone, let him at it. In fact, excitedly running outside with him to let him tear it up outside is great too. Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Being more active can be a sign of boredom, stress/anxiety, or just her exploring her new environment. I would suggest trying to give her more stimulus during the day or in the evening. A laser-pointer for her to chase around works nicely to get her tired out for the evening. Also, new scratching posts can be an option as well. It is also possible that she might smell cats outside, and might be stimulated to want to play with them at night, if the cats are roaming at night, and that might be making her more active. Try trimming her nails in case they are just longer and she is trying to shorten them. Also, you can try a Feliaway diffuser which helps some cats feel less stressful or anxious. Scratching and activity at night can be a difficult problem to treat, and it will involve just trying multiple things. Best of luck with Gungun.

Hello. While I do not know if there is anything wrong with your cat, it is refreshing to get a request about a healthy one. Georgie is still a very young cat, & perhaps she is sensing something in her environment that just turns her on. Plenty of plants are blooming, so she may be getting a whiff of something like catmint ( similar to catnip ) or she is aware of other cats in the vicinity. It is hard to tell. But there are no diseases or conditions that would be worrisome in a cat this young. Hello. If Pipi is in heat, & it sounds like she might be, spaying her will really help. But she is young & she will have occasional episodes of the zooms for some time to come. Sounds like Papi may have a case of the puppy zoomies. This is totally normal and usually happens when your dog is very excited or happy. Adding in some extra exercise or play time can help, as well as making sure there is a clear path to run around in!

It is possible there is something in the house such as a rodent or critter in the walls that she is hearing and trying to catch, especially if her behavior is at the same time/location each time. Checking for that is a good first step. Making sure to tired out Georgie may also help. If she continues to do the strange spinning and chasing, or seems disoriented, is losing balance, or has other symptoms in addition, a vet visit is best to rule out any health issues.
