My young cat acts super hyper and crazy at night. Is this normal?

It's not really "excess" energy - it's normal for them at this age, just like its normal for human toddlers to run and scream sometimes for no reason. Just part of being a baby :). She should become calmer as she gets older.

What you're describing is completely normal kitten behavior, which means it's just a phase that you need to get through. There is no way to ask Jinx to be calmer - but you can help her use some of that energy before bed by playing with her, encouraging her to chase a laser pointer, etc - and hopefully that helps tire her out so you can sleep! If you need to confine her to get some sleep, you might set her up in a different room with plenty of things to play with, or get her a large indoor kennel (big enough to fit food, water, litterbox, and toys). Her playing in the litterbox is also part of the mischievous kitten stage, but it might help to get her a larger litterbox that offers a bit more space, make the layer of litter deeper, or play around with the type of litter and see if there's one that better covers her stools. If all else fails, have patience and try to find the humor in her antics - she will calm down eventually when she grows out of her baby stage! Hope this helps!

These are pretty common behaviors for a young cat. Cats are often nocturnal/playful at night, and the its very rare for cats to greet their people when they come home. As far as following you around, and crying for you when you're gone, you are probably her favorite person! I don't think you have anything to worry about with her. You can add some environmental enrichment things to help keep her occupied/ entertained, and this may help. It sounds like Cheex-it is quite the character! Yes, this is all normal behavior. Kittens are very hyper active. They do eventually outgrow it. One thing you can do that may help would be to set aside 30 minutes to an hour every day for vigorous play. This will help him to be more calm throughout the day. The only thing I read that is somewhat concerning, is that he urinates on things. This could become a problem and may indicate a medical issue. I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian to check his urine for any signs of infection. I hope this is helpful and please feel free to post any additional questions!

I would suggest trying to give her more stimulus during the day or in the evening. A laser-pointer for her to chase around works nicely to get her tired out for the evening. Also, new scratching posts can be an option as well. It is also possible that she might smell cats outside, and might be stimulated to want to play with them at night, if the cats are roaming at night, and that might be making her more active. Try trimming her nails in case they are just longer and she is trying to shorten them. Also, you can try a Feliaway diffuser which helps some cats feel less stressful or anxious. Scratching and activity at night can be a difficult problem to treat, and it will involve just trying multiple things. Best of luck with Gungun.

It sounds like you have your hands full! For better or for worse, this is typical kitten behavior. He will mellow out as he grows up, although he may always have a rambunctious personality. For right now, schedule some time every day to play with him using a laser pointer, balls, feathers on a string, or any other toys he loves. Aim for 10 minutes three times a day. Try your best not to scream and move quickly when he runs underfoot because he will think it's a game and do it more. If he's an only animal, instead of feeding him in a bowl a few times a day, hide kibble around your home for him to hunt - start really small with this to make sure he gets the idea. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The opening or kneading of the claws when happy or being pet is normal in cats. It DOES hurt if their claws are on your leg. Keep the nails short. You probably are not going to be able to teach him not to do something that is instinctual. If he starts to bite you then stop petting him and watch for clues from him that he has had enough petting: ears turning back, turning to look at your hand, tail flicking and stop touching him before he goes to bite. Try not to yell no at him if that triggers biting. Kittens are full of energy and they grow out of it eventually. Provide lots of toys and play time. Soon enough he will be a sleepy adult cat and you'll miss the hyper kitten! Have a good day!
