Why is my pregnant cat pooping blood? When should I see a vet?

When pregnant, cats do not go into heat. Scarlett is either in heat and isn't pregnant, or is pregnant. It's concerning that she is pooping a little bit of blood, this could be from a GI illness, a foreign body, a sudden change in diet, or eating something rotten. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps her if it's only a little bit of blood. Feed her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, there is still blood in the poop, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. It sounds like your cat has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools. 

 Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites (most likely in a pregnant cat), dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. 

I would recommend taking your cat in to your vet to be examined. They will likely want to check a stool sample and may recommend some lab work, a dietary change, and/or antibiotics.

If you are sure it is coming from her anus, but she's otherwise acting normally, and the stools are formed and normal but there's a little blood from her anus afterwards, you could try adding a fiber and probiotic dietary supplement, this can help decrease inflammation in the colon. Something like this: If you aren't seeing any improvement, if her stools are soft or liquid or there is blood routinely present IN the stool, if she is vomiting, or the blood is coming from her vuvla, not her anus, have her evaluated by your vet. Talk to your vet about a rectal exam; we don't routinely do this in cats, but if her anal glands are bleeding or she has a growth or mass in her rectum, a rectal exam would be needed for evaluate for that. Hi there. In a scenario involving blood like this the best thing to do would be to take Booboo in to your local vet for an ultrasound or x rays. They can help determine pregnancy and they can help you find the source of the bleeding and potentially stop it. Hope this helps!

Hi, and thanks for your question. This may be caused by the space occupying kittens pushing on abdominal organs. I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days but you can keep the meals in small portions. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. Poor Cinnamon. Unfortunately without seeing her in person, it is impossible to say for sure what could be the cause for the blood. It could be a urinary tract infection, a uterine infection, colitis (blood from anus), or even a miscarriage. I have see straight blood come from all of these conditions. I would strongly recommend have your vet take a look at her to try and figure out what could be causing the blood. Your vet may be able to determine whether or not she is pregnant and also determine the cause of the blood and get her started on the proper (and safe) meds to help her feel better. If she is having a miscarriage and the fetuses die but she doesn't expel of them, this could cause her to become really sick if left untreated. It is possible that this particular stool was difficult to pass and you helping to remove it may have caused a small amount of bleeding from the rectal tissue. Cats can become constipated, and if she has been passing less stool than usual, straining to defecate and had a decreased appetite I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. There are some other things that can cause blood in the stool as well including intestinal parasites, colitis or even inflammatory bowel disease. If the blood is persistent you should make an appointment to see your veterinarian as well.
