My 11-year-old cat has blood in her stool after pooping. What's wrong?

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | spayed | 11 years and 4 months old | 10 lbs

11 year old female feline fecal matter coming out after she just went. It was stuck till I got it out. A little redness maybe blood . She did just eat. Probably had extra treats & some wet food with peas in it that she doesn't usually have. She could be stressed because I have been very stressed lately. She's been sitting on me & sleeping next to me since I've been home sick for a week. She doesn't normally do that.

It is possible that this particular stool was difficult to pass and you helping to remove it may have caused a small amount of bleeding from the rectal tissue. Cats can become constipated, and if she has been passing less stool than usual, straining to defecate and had a decreased appetite I would recommend seeing a veterinarian. There are some other things that can cause blood in the stool as well including intestinal parasites, colitis or even inflammatory bowel disease. If the blood is persistent you should make an appointment to see your veterinarian as well.

A sudden change in diet can lead to bloody stool, and that may be why there was blood in Icy's poop. Keep an eye on her for now, and if you continue to see blood in her poop, have her seen by a vet. Best of luck.

Blood in the stool usually indicates inflammation. It is likely part of her underlying intestinal condition. Usually when there is blood I like to start them on an antibiotic like metronidazole. Try giving your vet a call.

It looks like she may have had some bloody stool or diarrhea, or the blood might have been coming from an anal gland. If the stool in the litter box looked normal and she is acting fine otherwise I'd recommend monitoring her closely over the next 24 hours to see if it happens again and if it does I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian for an exam.

My 6-month-old kitten has blood in his stool. What should I do?

Blood in the stool is very worrisome to owners and I understand that but if it is a one time occurrence I would not be overly concerned. The most common reason for this colonic irritation is internal parasites. I suggest you speak to your vet about deworming. The two common parasites to cause blood in stool is hookworms and coccidia both of which are treated with different dewormers. You should have your vet run a fecal test first to figure out if that is the underlying reason. I would also suggest you start her on a probiotic and use it for at least 2 weeks. I recommend Fortiflora but any probiotic for cats should be OK (no human probiotics). My cat has blood on the outside of his stool. What should I do?

There can be many things causing this, including IBD, intestinal lymphoma, constipation causing trauma to the colon, intestinal parasites, anal gland issues, rectal polyps, bleeding/clotting disorders, among many others. I would recommend that Scooter be evaluated by your veterinarian to see what could be the cause and to receive appropriate treatment.

My kitten's bum is red and bleeding after pooping. What's wrong?

It looks like Coco may have a small amount of rectal tissue prolapsed. This can occur if they have parasites, chronic diarrhea, foreign body or constipation. I recommend having her checked for intestinal parasites and possibly adding water to her food to help her pass stool more easily. If she is vomiting or showing any other signs of illness she should see a pet ASAP.

My female cat is bleeding after pooping; why can't the vet find it?

If you are sure it is coming from her anus, but she's otherwise acting normally, and the stools are formed and normal but there's a little blood from her anus afterwards, you could try adding a fiber and probiotic dietary supplement, this can help decrease inflammation in the colon. Something like this: If you aren't seeing any improvement, if her stools are soft or liquid or there is blood routinely present IN the stool, if she is vomiting, or the blood is coming from her vuvla, not her anus, have her evaluated by your vet. Talk to your vet about a rectal exam; we don't routinely do this in cats, but if her anal glands are bleeding or she has a growth or mass in her rectum, a rectal exam would be needed for evaluate for that. My kitten has bloody stool on dry food. Is wet food the only option?

Blood in the stool can occur secondary to food sensitivity, but it can also be a sign of parasites or even occur secondary to stress, so I'd recommend seeing your veterinarian first to rule out these medical problems. Unfortunately if you're switching foods frequently it can be difficult to determine which is or isn't helping, so if your vet recommends a food trial you should stick to one specific food for at least 6 to 8 weeks before deciding if it is or isn't helping.

My recently adopted cat has blood in his stool. Should I see a vet?

Thanks for adopting Eli. Blood in the stool without constipation is often due to intestinal parasites. Please take a sample to your veterinarian and they will look under the microscope for parasite eggs. If they find some they will prescribe the correct dewormer for Eli. If there are no parasites and this continues Eli should go in for an exam. He could have an anal infection, rectal polyp or intestinal inflammation causing the blood. Cats do have blood in the stool more often than other animals so if he's normal and this only happens once in a while I would just keep an eye on him, and bring him in if it is a constant issue.
