My pregnant cat ate her kitten. Is she still pregnant? What now?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The placenta can be passed before, after or with the kitten. Sometimes animals eat the placenta before we notice. I would assume it passed. If she isn't eating, lethargic or has a fever she should be seen by a Vet. I highly recommend doing so regardless to see how many more kittens are left and discuss spaying her in the next 4-6 weeks before she comes in to heat again. I wish you the best!

Poor little kitten! It could be there were more yet to be born, and sometimes cats need help giving birth. I would take Sweetie and her kittens into a vet immediately to get checked out. Best of luck.

The only way to be sure there are no kittens left is for your veterinarian to do an exam and likely an x-ray of her belly to make sure there's no kittens still present. It maybe she only had one kitten. But it is also possible she's not wanting to eat because she could be having complications of labor. I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam to make sure there are no further issues.

There are several possibilities: She had a miscarriage and the kittens were dead and she cleaned up, ie ate them. Or she had them and hid them. You will know soon, when she disappears once in a while....you may need to follow her secretly to find the babies. third possibilities is that the babies had some defects and she ate them. She will have a discharge for about a week , which should be odorless. If she gets lethargic, stops eating or if the discharge gets smelly she will need to be examined by a vet.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Oh no! If the kitten looked premature she may have miscarried it. Sadly this happens in the animal world as it does with humans. It is also unfortunately natural for a cat to eat a dead abnormal kitten. It isn't wrong for Lala to be examined by a Vet. They can take an X-ray to see how many kittens are left and use the ultrasound to see if they are moving and have heart beats. If there is no vaginal discharge, fever, she is acting fine and is eating hopefully she can deliver the remaining kittens. I wish you the best!

Either Cara is a bad mother or this is a natural thing she is doing because the kittens are abnormal. Nature is hard and animals do things differently than people. If she keeps having litters that are born prematurely or are sickly that is a problem. I would suggest having her spayed so she can not have kittens anymore. If she is close to her due date, she could have stopped eating because she is ready to give birth. If not, then there may be other medical issues going on. Without an exam it is hard to say. I would offer her kitten food- canned and dry- and continue to monitor her. If she doesn’t eat for longer than 24 hours, I recommend taking her to a vet for an exam. It is not uncommon for young cats to get pregnant and it doesn’t always mean there will be a problem with delivery. Good luck and kisses to Squeaker!
