My young pregnant cat stopped eating. Is this normal before birth?

You can see a cat lose its appetite while pregnant, usually around three to four weeks into the pregnancy. It is good that you took Puffy into a vet, however, as it sounds like she was sick if she had a high fever. I am a little concerned that she still is only eating a little, and I would take her back into the vet for a health check to make sure everything is ok. It's very important for her health and the health of her kittens to eat properly, and since she has been sick, follow up visits with the vet should be done. It depends on how close to labor she is. Some pets may not stop eating until right before actual labor, while some may stop eating and lose appetite about a day or so before. Making sure she has a nest box to have her babies and keeping an eye on her for additional signs of labor such as visible contractions and pushing is best. If she continues to have discharge without going into labor, or is in labor for several hours without producing a kitten, seeking veterinary care ASAP is best to make sure there isn't an underlying problem or stuck kitten.

I am worried that Mimi may have a complication with the pregnancy. Pregnant cats (especially later in pregnancy) are usually very hungry. For her not to be hungry indicates that she is really feeling bad. I recommend taking her to get examined by a vet as soon as you can. It is fines as long as she does eat and drink. Sometimes a cat's preference changes, especially when under a hormonal influence such as pregnancy. Feed her a good quality wet food twice daily and from day 40 of pregnancy , feed her canned kitten food as she will need the extra nutrition for the kittens' growth.

Decreased appetite is normal in the later stages of pregnancy. So no worries there, as long as she is eating portions of her food. Loose stool can also occur, but should return to normal after a few days, and she should still have normal energy level and not hide. Hiding in cats, when they typically are social cats, is usually an indicator that something is wrong. I would see how she does in the next day or two, and if the diarrhea does not resolve, then have her stools checked by your vet. The hair loss may be related to normal shedding, but often in pregnancy, some hair loss will occur. I would switch her food from a maintenance or adult cat food to a kitten food. Feed her the kitten food for the rest of her pregnancy & while she nurses the kittens. Once the kittens start to wean onto solid food ( at about 3-4 weeks of age ) you can slowly transition her back to her regular adult cat food.
