My cat ate her premature kitten. Is this normal? What's next?

Pet's info: Cat | Manx | Female | unspayed | 10 lbs

My cat just had a kitten that seems VERY premature. She ate it. I feel more in there but cant tell if they're moving or not. My cat is sleeping and acting like nothing has happened. This is her 1st litter and shes only delivered the dead one so far.

Oh no! If the kitten looked premature she may have miscarried it. Sadly this happens in the animal world as it does with humans. It is also unfortunately natural for a cat to eat a dead abnormal kitten.

It isn't wrong for Lala to be examined by a Vet. They can take an X-ray to see how many kittens are left and use the ultrasound to see if they are moving and have heart beats. If there is no vaginal discharge, fever, she is acting fine and is eating hopefully she can deliver the remaining kittens.

Either Cara is a bad mother or this is a natural thing she is doing because the kittens are abnormal. Nature is hard and animals do things differently than people. If she keeps having litters that are born prematurely or are sickly that is a problem. I would suggest having her spayed so she can not have kittens anymore. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The placenta can be passed before, after or with the kitten. Sometimes animals eat the placenta before we notice. I would assume it passed. If she isn't eating, lethargic or has a fever she should be seen by a Vet. I highly recommend doing so regardless to see how many more kittens are left and discuss spaying her in the next 4-6 weeks before she comes in to heat again. I wish you the best!

My cat gave birth, found a deformed kitten. Should I see a vet?

There is a possibility that she only had one kitten and this was it. Cats will eat seriously deformed or dead kittens in order to not leave traces for prey animals. This happens inside a house, too, as it is an instinct. It is a good idea to have a veterinarian give her an exam to make sure thatg there is no kitten left behind or a uterine infection. Very small or young cat having their first litter can have difficulty giving birth and sometimes a kitten cannot be born and can cause sepsis in a cat as it decays in the uterus.

She needs to be checked to see if there are more kittens yet to be born, and she likely needs assistance to give birth. Animals are very good a 'cleaning up after themselves', so if there was a dead little kitten then it isn't that surprising that the mom would eat it. In the future, removing the dead kittens before the mother can eat it is a good idea. In the mean-time, please monitor Venica for signs of illness (vomiting, diarrhea, painful abdomen, weakness), and if she shows any signs please bring her to a vet. Best of luck with Venica.

It’s not normal instinct but reports of eating kittens are out there. Not all cats make good mothers or have good instincts. It sounds like your kitten needs to see the veterinarian quickly. My cat had a stillborn kitten and won't eat. Is she sick or mourning?

The only way to be sure there are no kittens left is for your veterinarian to do an exam and likely an x-ray of her belly to make sure there's no kittens still present. It maybe she only had one kitten. But it is also possible she's not wanting to eat because she could be having complications of labor. I recommend having your veterinarian do an exam to make sure there are no further issues.
