Am I overfeeding my 4-week-old kitten transitioning to wet food?

Your kitten should be growing in small amounts ever day. If you use a small kitchen scale, you can monitor his growth. If he is isn't growing, it could be that he isn't eating enough, intestinal parasites, or a congenital issue. At 4 weeks, he should start transitioning to kitten food. You can continue to mix kitten food with kitten milk replacer for another week or two. It may take time for your older cat to like the kitten. Kittens have a lot of energy and some older cats just don't want to deal with it! Make sure the older cat has her own place, and you need two separate litter boxes and food and water bowls.

It sounds like he is under weight, so I reccomend continuing the kmr every 6 hours for at-least two more weeks. Leave out kitten kibble for him at all times. If he is eating this well in two weeks, then you can incrementally reduce the amount of kmr feedings over the following week and hopefully wean him off by the end of that week. I can understand your dilemma here. You can try offering her 1/4 cup 3 times a day and see if his curbs her hunger. The food recommendations on the bag are more like guidelines. I would also recommend weaning her off the milk over the next week, because she is old enough where she doesn’t need it after 6 weeks of age. I would say probably around four weeks of age. It’s fine to give it wet food with KMR, and over the course of two weeks, decrease the amount of KMR and increase the amount of wet food until it is eating the wet food only. Best of luck.

At 10 weeks of age your kitten should be able to eat kibble just fine. You should not need to add canned food to her diet unless you want to do it occasionally as a snack/treat. You may want to moisten the food with water before feeding her. Soft food can certainly lead to softer stools but you should make sure she has been dewormed too. I hope this helps. When feeding a milk replacer, the general rule is that kittens should be drinking 22 to 26 cc of formula per 100 grams of body weight over the course of the day.
