How much food should my 5-week-old kitten eat daily if she's hungry?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 24 days old | 1lb

I have an about 5 week old kitten. I bought her Hills science diet vet kitten <1 yr food. The bag says if the kitten weighs 1 lb feed them a 1/4 cup of food. I'm guessing her weight around a lb. I also bought some kitten milk replacer which I added to the food as per the instructions. However she still seems hungry and I'm not sure based on the food bag if it's to give her a 1/4 cup a day or at a time I just says a 1/4 cup per lb. How much kitten food should a kitten get in a day?

I can understand your dilemma here. You can try offering her 1/4 cup 3 times a day and see if his curbs her hunger. The food recommendations on the bag are more like guidelines. I would also recommend weaning her off the milk over the next week, because she is old enough where she doesn’t need it after 6 weeks of age. I hope this helps and best wishes caring for your pet Minerva. You certainly picked an excellent quality food to give her a great start! Take care.
