My old cat has eye problems and kidney disease. Get a second opinion?

Yes, please have her reevaluated. The blindness likely is caused by high blood pressure and the high blood pressure is likely caused by the kidney disease. Your cat will need to be evaluated and then put on blood pressure medication. Subcutaneous fluid giving should not stress her, if it is done right. You may want to have your vet show you again, how it is done. Please take Kitkat for a recheck today.

I'm sorry your cat has a retinal detachment. If the retinas remain detached for more than a day or two, the prognosis is poor for a return of normal vision. Therefore, the key to a successful outcome is rapid diagnosis and early administration of the proper medication to lower blood pressure. Given that you have already started medication, she may have a good prognosis for restoring her sight, but only the vet treating her can say for sure. Your vet is correct that dogs can do well being blind, but I can understand also why you would not want Tigger to be both deaf and blind. I think it would be worth getting a second opinion on this, especially if you have concerns about him being both deaf and blind. To save the other eye Monu probably needs to have her hypertension controlled. I typically use amlodipine for blood pressure. Topical corticosteroids like prednisolone acetate help reduce inflammation from hyphema to prevent glaucoma. If you feel your vet isn’t helping you could get a second opnion.

Another option is to continue draining it on an as needed basis but that may get uncomfortable with time if you have to do it consistently. Anesthesia can be very safe if done appropriately. Hello. I would not recommend removing the kidney until you are absolutely sure it is the cause of all the problems. I assume all blood work & a urinalysis show the kidney problems & I assume at least an ultrasound was performed on the kidneys. I would suggest that you consider having an excretory urogram or nuclear scintigraphy performed to assess the functionality of both kidneys before putting Randi through surgery only to have the good kidney fail. A needle biopsy can also be done to see if the "dead" kidney truly needs to be removed.
