My old cat has an eye lump. Are there surgery alternatives for kidney issues?

Without knowing the nature of the lump it is impossible to advise - some masses are abscesses and respond to antibiotics but with many tumors surgery or chemotherapy would be recommended. A full check up and possibly a needle biopsy would be recommended

You are right, there is always some risk with surgery. However, you may want to visit with your veterinarian about the anesthesia monitoring they do. It may surprise you how low the risk is and how much effort is put into safety. As far as the mass goes, I do get concerned anytime a mass is changing. I do recommend surgical removal any time there is a big change to an existing mass. However, there is always the possibility that it could remain quiet and never cause a problem. Hello. This is very likely a benign tumor. I have a personal cat that has almost the exact same tumor on his chin that I am watching, too. But this is awful close to the eye, & if it gets any bigger, it may rub on the cornea. If you were my client, I would recommend removal. At 13, if your cat is relatively healthy with no underlying problems seen on bloodwork, then the surgery should go very smoothly. I would consider having it removed soon. Unfortunately no, any lump removal does require being put under, whether is general anesthesia or sedation. Lump removal can be done in senior cats, and I recommend having a geriatric blood panel done on Pursie prior to deciding to remove the lump. That will tell the vet how her organ's are functioning, and can give an idea of the anesthetic risk of putting her under.

Hi. I understand your reluctance to anesthetize an older pet but there are many options that can make it a safe procedure. I would have her evaluated but a veterinarian to discuss options. If this is truly a cyst sometimes they can be sterilely drained. It will recur but may reduce the size for a while. Otherwise doing preanesthetic bloodwork can assess if she would be a good candidate for anesthesia and you and your vet can work out the best plan for Ghosty's treatment together.

At her age and the fast pace of which it is growing, it may be a cancer. If surgery is not an option, then you are looking at keeping her comfortable which is very reasonable given her age. As long as she is happy and not in pain and has a good appetite, then just let her keep going as she is. When she no longer wants to eat or no longer seems to enjoy life or the tumor begins to limit her mobility, then it will be time to consider euthanasia.

In a senior cat, there is always a chance any lump could be cancer unfortunately. If it is cancer, the vet will likely want to do further tests to see if it's spread. There may be chance this is just a polyp, and removing it is curative. You need to be aware that any surgery carries risks due to anesthesia, but the vet wouldn't recommend the surgery if they didn't feel it was safe for him. I do recommend having the surgery done.
