My new cat just threw up yellow vomit. Is this normal for new cats?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 4 years and 3 months old

Hi, my new cat, Ghost, who I just got two days ago threw up this morning. It is kinda thick and yellowish? I’m not sure if I should be concerned. This is my first time owning a cat and i’m not familiar with what could have been going on when he was in his old household. I hope you can help me.

Many cats develop signs of mild gastroenteritis once they change the owner. It is usually related to stress in the completely new environment and new food that is often introduced at the time of moving house. If it was only one vomit this morning, and Ghost is looking comfortable and has good appetite, you just need to monitor him at home. Ideally, he should be fed, at least for the next few days, the same food he was fed by the previous owners. If you like to change the food to something new, it should be slowly introduced to Ghost, mixed with his current food for the first few days. Please, offer him small meals 3-4 times a day for the next 2 days and he should have free access to water. If he refuses to eat or looks unwell you may need to take him to your local vets for a check.
