My cat vomited yellow bile after eating. Is it just an upset stomach?

There could be several causes of vomiting in your cat - gastritis (inflammation of the stomach wall), pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal parasites. The vomitus is yellow because it is mostly stomach acid and bile. This is not unusual if the stomach is empty of food when the cat vomits. I would recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours (small amounts of water is ok) and see if the vomiting resolves. If Toffee continues vomiting then I would recommend you take her in to the vet to be checked out.

I recommend withholding food for tonight, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. This is not specific to any disease, but indicates that something is either directly upsetting their stomachs, or generally making them feel nauseous. The yellow color is due to bile staining which doesn't tell much other than they are vomiting on an empty stomach. One possibility is that they ate something they were not supposed to like medication, a chemical (i.e. antifreeze), raw meat, or a plant (i.e. lilies). Vomiting is often the first signs of an exposure to a toxin, so I recommend checking if it's possible for them to have eaten anything other than their normal diet. Vomiting and nausea can also be due to an infectious disease, organ failure, or imbalance in the blood. In order to narrow down the possibilities, you would have to take them to the vet for an evaluation. This doesn't appear to be an emergency, but if they are acting very depressed and is vomiting continuously, then it would be best to take them to the vet sooner rather than later. If they are otherwise acting normal, then it's important to not give any food for the next eight hours, but make sure they have plenty of clean water available. If they are not vomiting in eight hours, then only feed a small amount of food (about 1Tbsp.). If they keep that down, then you can feed a little more in two hours. If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

Hello. I would stop all milk. Your cat may have developed an intolerance to milk. Offer plenty of fresh water, & low salt broths made from chicken or beef. If he continues to vomit, he may need to see a veterinarian to rule out parasites or other causes of intestinal disease that is making him unwell. Yes I suspect it's the kitten food causing Buddy to have an upset stomach and vomit. Sudden changes in diet can lead to these symptoms. Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones or skin) in small amounts a couple times a day for a few days, the start slowly adding in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, vomits the bland diet, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, continues to have diarrhea, has blood in his stool, and/or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet immediately. I'm sorry Zoey isn't doing well! While it could be a hairball, she could be suffering from a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or could have pancreatitis.
