My neutered cat is still licking and mounting. Is this normal?

Cats can exhibit mounting behavior of other cats and objects like pillows. The behavior is generally benign (there is not penetration) unless one cat bites the back of the neck too hard (this could break the skin an cause an abscess). Most cats will not tolerate this and will let the other cat know. Certainly stop the behavior is one cat is being bullied or there is a risk of physical harm. Some play behavior can also look like mounting (with mouthing, climbing on the other cat) but it's just wrestling. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Yes, this can be normal. It could be Draco may have been doing this before, but you simply didn't notice, and now that you are paying closer attention to him due the fact he was neutered, you seeing this behavior. As long as everything else is normal, he's going to the litter box normally, this isn't an issue. It would be an issue if he was crying when he tried to pee, you saw blood in his urine, he was attempting to pee but could not, was going to the litter box multiple times in a short period of time, was peeing in small amounts frequently, and/or was very lethargic. If you see any of those signs, then it's an emergency and he would need to see a vet immediately. At this point in time, I do think what you are seeing is normal behavior, however. Male cats will tend to do this behavior if they have not been neutered. If your cat has been neutered I would check with the vet who performed the surgery to ensure that both testicles were retrieved at the time of the surgery and that your cat does not have a retained testicle or is what we call a cryptorchid. Some cats fail to descend a testicle and it remains in the abdominal cavity. One of the signs that this has happened is latent "sexual activity such as "masturbation activity" such as your cat is doing. Not all cats who do this have retained testicles, but it can often be the case. If you and your vet know for 100% certainty that he had both testicles removed, then this may just be a behavior that your cat does. Your vet may have some suggestions to dissuade your cat from doing this, but it is generally nothing harmful and the cat is just acting out, will finish and there is nothing else to it. If the cat did retain a testicle, the vet can go in surgically to remove it. It is important to remove the retained testicles because they can become cancerous. I myself have a cat who does this (he had both his jewels removed successfully) so we just call it making "dirty biscuits". There really is no reason for his behavior, he just does it... But I made sure that there was no medical reason first! :) Usually I have a nice water bottle on hand and that seems to work great :)

It does usually take a few months for all the hormones to dissipate post neutering, however if the cat was neutered at a much older age, he may still have some of the behaviors/interest even without the ability. Keeping the cats separated if this behavior occurs, or even adding in a pheromone diffuser (such as Feliway) may help with inter-cat interactions.

I'm sorry to hear of your concerns with Milo. It does look like he has a scab on his scrotum. It is possible that he had an injury to the area, a reaction to sutures if they were used during his neuter procedure or an infection that is beginning to heal. If he continues to rub at the area, the scab is not going away or if you notice any redness or drainage, I would recommend that you have him seen by your veterinarian.

It is unlikely related to the surgery from getting fixed but does look inflamed and infected. Because it has been going on so long, I would take him to the vet to be seen for treatment. They may need to a round of antibiotics and anti inflammatory to help improve it. I would suspect it is an allergy or a previous wound/injury that is just not healing correctly

From reading your description, I think I know what Apollo is doing and it's something that may make you a little grossed out. It could be that he is masturbating. Even neutered cats will do this because it feels good, and the behavior is shown by kneading the front paws and movement from the back legs including kicking them out or appearing to have spasm like motions. He's cleaning himself after he is done. I'd be concerned about fleas if he was scratching a lot, overgrooming, and losing fur along his back by his tail and on his stomach. You can get him to stop this behavior by distracting him when he starts with a toy or treat, or picking him up and moving him. I hope this helps!
