Why does my cat have erections after being neutered? Is it normal?

HI there! I'm so sorry to hear about Gulbi's troubles. Although there can be some discomfort following a neuter, I would definitely keep a close eye on Gulbi. Male cats can have a condition where they are unable to pee. Often we will say a cat "is blocked". This is a medical emergency because when an animal cannot urinate, it can back up their kidneys, and cause them to become toxic, very sick, and possibly pass away. I would continue to watch Gulbi as you are. He needs to produce a nice stream of urine, and large quantities of urine in the litter box. If there is any straining, especially frequent straining, or just tiny circles of urine in the litter box, then he should be evaluated by a veterinarian. He may need some pain medications, and if he already has some, he may need some additional ones. It may be helpful to put Gulbi in a small room by himself for a couple of days, like the bathroom, with his litter box. This way you can keep an eye on his litter box and the amount of urine he is putting out. If he is licking at his neuter area, I would pick up a cone from the pet store. Also important is to bring Gulbi to see the vet if there is any swelling, redness, or discharge, like pus, around his neuter site. I hope you find this answer helpful. Best of luck!

Male cats will tend to do this behavior if they have not been neutered. If your cat has been neutered I would check with the vet who performed the surgery to ensure that both testicles were retrieved at the time of the surgery and that your cat does not have a retained testicle or is what we call a cryptorchid. Some cats fail to descend a testicle and it remains in the abdominal cavity. One of the signs that this has happened is latent "sexual activity such as "masturbation activity" such as your cat is doing. Not all cats who do this have retained testicles, but it can often be the case. If you and your vet know for 100% certainty that he had both testicles removed, then this may just be a behavior that your cat does. Your vet may have some suggestions to dissuade your cat from doing this, but it is generally nothing harmful and the cat is just acting out, will finish and there is nothing else to it. If the cat did retain a testicle, the vet can go in surgically to remove it. It is important to remove the retained testicles because they can become cancerous. I myself have a cat who does this (he had both his jewels removed successfully) so we just call it making "dirty biscuits". There really is no reason for his behavior, he just does it... But I made sure that there was no medical reason first! :) Usually I have a nice water bottle on hand and that seems to work great :)

This can be completely normal, especially in pets that are intact. Intact males have high levels of testosterone that causes an erection during times of excitation. I wouldn't be too concerned unless it remains out afterwards and doesn't go back in, or your cat starts vocalizing and is seen straining to urinate (signs of a urinary blockage). You can still opt to get him checked out by your vet just to make sure he is physically ok; however he is likely just fine.

That is unusual. I recommend to have Severus see the veterinarian to get his bladder checked for any signs of infection or crystals in case this is causing a burning sensation. It’s possible this is coincidental to the neuter procedure. Since he can’t talk and tell you if something is wrong, it’s best to play it safe. When they groom around their penis it can become erect. It may also be time to get him neutered. If he is excessively grooming down there he should see a Vet and have his urine tested. Hello, & yes, this may be normal behavior for a young neutered cat. In most cases it is an appeasing behavior, or attention seeking. If when Duncan does this & it helps him settle, & he is doing no damage to himself, toys or the environment, then let him be. He may need more enrichment & toys to occupy him, using food toys are a good idea. Most cats quit within a few minutes. Do not punish him or take toys away as this may make the behavior worse.
