My neutered cat is mounting my other cat. Is this normal behavior?

It does usually take a few months for all the hormones to dissipate post neutering, however if the cat was neutered at a much older age, he may still have some of the behaviors/interest even without the ability. Keeping the cats separated if this behavior occurs, or even adding in a pheromone diffuser (such as Feliway) may help with inter-cat interactions.

Hello, & yes, this may be normal behavior for a young neutered cat. In most cases it is an appeasing behavior, or attention seeking. If when Duncan does this & it helps him settle, & he is doing no damage to himself, toys or the environment, then let him be. He may need more enrichment & toys to occupy him, using food toys are a good idea. Most cats quit within a few minutes. Do not punish him or take toys away as this may make the behavior worse. Socks and Prince are adorable! Thanks for posting pictures! Mounting behaviors are often dominance related and not sexual. So, since Prince has now reached sexual maturity at 6 months of age, Socks may be trying to make it clear to Prince that Socks is the more dominant cat. This can be a problem if it causes fighting, but is a normal behavior. The only solution I could offer you would be to have Prince (or both cats) fixed. That is unusual. I recommend to have Severus see the veterinarian to get his bladder checked for any signs of infection or crystals in case this is causing a burning sensation. It’s possible this is coincidental to the neuter procedure. Since he can’t talk and tell you if something is wrong, it’s best to play it safe. Male cats will tend to do this behavior if they have not been neutered. If your cat has been neutered I would check with the vet who performed the surgery to ensure that both testicles were retrieved at the time of the surgery and that your cat does not have a retained testicle or is what we call a cryptorchid. Some cats fail to descend a testicle and it remains in the abdominal cavity. One of the signs that this has happened is latent "sexual activity such as "masturbation activity" such as your cat is doing. Not all cats who do this have retained testicles, but it can often be the case. If you and your vet know for 100% certainty that he had both testicles removed, then this may just be a behavior that your cat does. Your vet may have some suggestions to dissuade your cat from doing this, but it is generally nothing harmful and the cat is just acting out, will finish and there is nothing else to it. If the cat did retain a testicle, the vet can go in surgically to remove it. It is important to remove the retained testicles because they can become cancerous. I myself have a cat who does this (he had both his jewels removed successfully) so we just call it making "dirty biscuits". There really is no reason for his behavior, he just does it... But I made sure that there was no medical reason first! :) Usually I have a nice water bottle on hand and that seems to work great :)

Hi there! Behavioral issues in cats can definitely be frustrating. Obsessive mounting can often be attributed to underlying anxiety. I would recommend trying an anxiety reducing pheromone product called Feliway. It comes in diffusers, sprays, and collars and often helps multi-cat household behavior problems. If there is no improvement with Feliway, I would recommend talking to your vet about putting Max on a trial of anti-anxiety medication to see if that helps.

I have never heard of one cat killing another over mating issues, so you shouldn't need to worry about this :) However, I'm sure it is annoying for your female cat to have him constantly trying to mount her, and this can certainly lead to developing aggression issues between the cats over time. I would try to get your male kitty neutered as soon as possible, to help prevent this from continuing to happen. In the meantime, if he won't leave her alone, you may need to keep them separated until after he is neutered.
